Junior Week Themes Due by 12 Wednesday See Campus Calendar Emerald Judges to Pick Queen At 4 in Gerlinger See Campus Calendar VOLUME XLIV UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, EUGENE, TUESDAY, APRIL 6, 1943 NUMBER 102 * Marjorie Major Named Emerald Editor ____ —See Story Column l Igloo Rally to Send Off 177 Army Reserves Helen Johnson Chosen Head Of Year Book for 1943-1944 Upon recommendation of the educational activities com mittee, Marjorie Major, junior in journalism, was appointed editor of the Emerald and Helen Johnson, junior in English, Oregana editor for 1943-44 at the executive council meeting Monday evening. Marjorie Young, Emerald news editor, was appointed man aging editor; and Bill Lindley, as sistant in the news department, Was named news editor. #ack L. Billings, present Emer editor will continue in this position until the end of the school year, at which time Miss Major will assume the editorial responsibility. Miss Major is now assistant to the editor on the edi torial page. Miss Major worked on the night staff, copy desk, and as a reporter for the Emerald her freshman and sophomore years. She is a member of Pot and Quill and won their poetry contest her freshman year. Vice-president of Theta Sigma Phi, women’s national journalism honorary, she is woman’s page editor of the Emerald this year. She is also assistant editor and a city editor for spring term. She won the intersectional Jewett contest fall term of this year and itB editorial, "We are so sorryy, Dr. Kuo,” was sent by the Reg ister-Guard to Madame Chiang Kai Chek. Miss Major stated in her peti tion that she would make a def inite attempt through the Emer ald to tie former students in the armed forces to the school and to interest those service men who Will be stationed here. Miss Johnson was sub-editor of the school section of the Ore gana her freshman year, wom an's editor her sophomore year, and associate editor her junior year. She is a member of Phi Theta Upsilon, junior women’s service honorary, and of Gamma Alpha Chi, women’s advertising honorary. She is also a member ot Pot and Quill. Wesley Sulli van, this year’s year book editor. MARJORIE MAJOR . . . . . . chosen last night to head the Emerald staff during 1943-44. She will succeed Jack L. Billings, who took the place of Ray Schrick after Schrick left for the army air corps this year. Chi Psi house will pick up the mill race houses and will be led by Hank Doeneka, Virginia Wright, Betty Kincaid, and For rest Kjemhus. The ATO group will go by the upper campus hous es and sorority row. It will be led by Phyllis Evans, Joan Holstad, Babe Groshong, ;\nd Barbara Mc Clung. The dorm rally will pith, up the Sammy’s, women's dorm??, and other nearby houses. Betty Ann Keup, Charline Pelly, and Bob Sell will lead this group. Groups Meet All three groups will meet on the. library lawn at 6:45 for a. short rally led by Tom Hazzard. From there the band will lead the Special ERC Rally at 2 Honoring ERC men as well as all the other men who have left and will be leaving tlio University, a speeial assembly will be held this afternoon at 2 in McArthur court, with all students and towspeople invit ed. A block of seats will be re served in the front of the court for the ERC men who are leav ing. The University band will play for the occasion, and the main speech, which will bo short, will be given by Colonel Carlton E. Spencer, assistant state director of selective serv ice, representing Governor Earl Snell. Two o'clock classes will not meet, but will meet Thursday at 11 a.m. instead. The assem bly will end in time for ERO men to report for orders at 4 p.m. ially to the Igloo. Skull and Dag ger, Kwama, and the rally squad will'lead the three rallies. A prize, as yet unannounced, will be given for the best sign carried in the rally. Lea Anderson will introduce Ray Dickson, master of ceremo nies for the program, at the rally in McArthur court. The program will be as follows: Ted Loud Leads Yells led by Ted Lour followed by a specialty number by Helen Holden; “Four Knights and A. Dream" -Charlotte Getning, Eu gene Ccccl'.ini, Don Bridenstino, Frank Sardam, and Paul Beard, singing two songs; yells led by Ted Loud; Keith Hoppes and N >r ma Baker in a "Baby Snooks1’ skit and a “Frankie and Johnnie” song specialty.
