Long live intramural basketball might well be the cry of those who have watched the house competition for the past month. Though it is true that' the season's play has been quite rough, the real purpose of this activity has been attained, that of creating a high type of sportsmanship and the development of competitive spirit. Disputes have been short lived and cer tain instances of bad officiating", although not too frequent, have been overlooked nobly. Special mention might be given to the Betas, whose heart-breaking one-point defeat in the ■mi-finals was taken in true sportsmanlike fashion. Exit, Intramural Basketball Declared “A” champs after yesterday’s festivities had ended, the Awful Awfuls were not conceded too much of a chance back in January when it all started. It was quite questionable whether or not they would even have a team since Kelly, Martini and Booras were the only holdovers from the year before. Ness and Carr were picked up to form a starting unit and though substitutes were rather uncommon when the Awfs took the floor, they came through undefeated. Now the problem is determining just which of these men belong on the all-star team since all are nearly equal in ability. It is interesting to note that out of the champion Awful Awfuls and the triumphant Betas in intramural handball, five out of the nine men represented were from Washington high school in Portland. George Booras, Harry Martini are the basketball artists, while Dick Rathbun, Paul Beard, and Frank Jacobson'were the Colonial handballers. Mi Star Tilt Off Speaking of the all star team, selections are slated to appear toward the end of next week. As for the all star, Greek-Independent game, a new light was shed on the subject yesterday as General Promoter Bill McKevitt announced that the tilt scheduled for Wednesday night had been indefinitely postponed. The school council re fused to grant permission for this annual intramural event on the basis that the ban on mid-week activities goes in to effect next week. However, even though the next few weekends are filled or closed an attempt will still he made to play this crowd-ap pealing contest. Student interest has been mounting stead ily in favor of such a game and the money taken in will go to the campus service fund. use Still Reigns Currently boasting a 14 game winning streak, the Trojans {Am Southern California still rule as kings of southland bas k mb all. The Southern Conference crown is expected to be sewed up, by “El Trojan" this weekend as Stanford invades Los Angeles. Another sterling example of the little man's ability to play the big man’s game (we have our Kirsch and William son) is Gene Rock, Trojan junior who has been averaging well over 12 points per game. Rock stands 5 feet, 8 inches and plays the forward position which might be termed un usual for a man of his size. Conversely, Julius Johnson, seven foot four and oner half inches, please note, playing for Lockheed Aircraft in an industrial league recently pocketed 18 points in a game and is one of the big guns of the P-38 men. Local League Gets Hot Much attention of late is being focused on the current red hot basketball race for the city league title. Winners of 12 straight, Joe Gordon’s Guards have fought their way into the and appear to be unstopable. Still in the running and of fering stiff competition are the Richfield Oilers, Northwest Christian College, and First Baptist. One of the initial signs of the drastic curtailment of inter collegiate football came out of Washington State college Thursday with the announcement of the discontinuation of spring football practice. According to the WSC athletic board only a few of the 80 varsity football prospects will be avail able for next season. Whether other schools will follow suit or not is a topic of conversation but many of the less import ant sports have already been cancelled. Beavers-Ducks Ready For Finale Tonight By FKEI) BECKWITH It’s getaway night in the Oregon - Oregon State basketball series this p.m., us the Ducks and Beavers take the Igloo boards for the fourth and final edition of their 194,S melon-tossing feud. Prior to last night’s game, the green-and-gold and the blaek-and orange had split their first two contests, the Corvallis cagers annex ing bail game number one, 43-36 on their own maples, and the Hob sonites cashing m a victory pay check in this same Igloo pavilion, 50-35. It was just a week ago to night that the varsity floating zone and man-to-man defense thoroughly checked the "Slats" Gill men’s attack. For Oregon, it will be the last call to the basket firing line against the traditional rivals for seniors Warren Taylor, Don Kirsch, Rolph Fuhrman and pos sibly Walt Reynolds, who inci dentally has another year of eli gibility if he is around to use it. Odds Are Crazy The odds on tonight’s cage clash resemble a crazy-quilt pat tern. It is tougher than tough to pick a winner in any Oregon OSC basketball series, let alone this season’s intrastate battle. Don Cecil and Glen Warren will sparkplug the Beaver offense from their forward positions, al though high-scoring Lew Beck, veteran guard, .will probably toss in more baskets than any other rival hoopsman. Tonight's game, as last night’s affair, will have definite bearing on the northern division standings of the Pacific Coast conference race. Howard “Hobby” Hobson did not elect to state a definite start ing line-up but indicated that the following fivesome would proba bly take pinewoods along about S p.m.: Warren Taylor and Rolph Fuhrman, forwards; Roger Wi ley, canter; Captain Don Kirscir and little Stan Williamson, guards. Almost certain to see action are; Roy Seeborg and Bob Wren, forwards, Wally Borrevik, cen ter; A1 Popick and Bob Newland, guards. In all probability, Ed Dick, for ward, and Sammy Crowell, guard, should leave the substitute bench to enter the fray. If any advantage can be stat ed, the Ducks should be waived the cake and ice cream on the basis that the ball game is on their own hardwoods. Beck and Durdan That smooth working - expert ball handling combination of Lew Beck and Don Durdan will be out to showcase their ability as po tential all-league material before the paying and non-paying cus tomers. The early bird grabs the best seat. We’ll see you in the before game-coke line. BEAVEIi TROUBLE MAKERS PAY CALL TONIGHT . . . . . . Guards Lew Beck and Don Durdan will be on the Oregon State firing line. More champs With the possible exception of a post-season All-Star cage ex hibition, winter-term intramurals finished their regular schedules and play-offs this week. By the crowning of Awful Aw fuls and Sigma Chi as hoop cham pions and' Beta Theta Pi as win ners of the handball glory, an eventful season of team sports has come to an end in time to give everyone a chance to “hit the books” in preparation for the final cramming. The individual campus tourna ments in ping pong, tennis, hand ball, and golf, which were start ed last fall, have been canceled, according to the intramural of fice. Eliminations were not com pleted in time due to the ad verse weather conditions and the fact that many of the “athletic artists” originally signed up have since entered the service. University of Connecticut re ports continuing expansion of services. i'll!!liliI!;.li;l|l!ilU!ill«llllllllillll|llllllllllllilllll)lltlllll!llllllll!IIHIII»lllllllllllHIII!llllllllllllllllllillllllllllllll!lllliBllllllllllllllll|lllllllllll!millllllllllinilllllllllllll!IIHIIUIII!lllllllli:! -V? | UO-OSC Check Chart Game Time — 8 o’Clock PROBABLE STARTING LINEUPS: jOSC BEAVERS UO WEBFOOTC | Ht.
