the company, all of them under
the age of 30 and American citi

Juilliard school of music in New
York where the idea for the
“Marriage of.Figaro" production
first originated.
A problem which at first faced
the company was how they could
bring opera to the American pub
lic if burdened with the cost of
transporting ..elaborate scenery.
But they soon discovered the prin
ciple upon which “The Marriage
of Figaro” is produced: that if
you substitute a good script and
an artful narrator for the usual
scenery, the audience will use its
imagination and help build the set
for itself.

Dean Jewell Donates
Cook for MacArthur
Dr. J. R. Jewell, dean of the
school of education, has a rather
unique, remote-control part in
the war, for he has “given” Gen
eral Douglas MacArthur a cook,
Arthur “Nannie” Raynor by
name, who according to AP dis
patches in last week’s papers is
the big reason why General Mac
Arthur has been keeping fit.
“Nannie” Raynor was a stu
dent and personal friend of Dean
Jewell's when Dean Jewell was
head of the college of education
at the University of Arkansas.
When Dr. Jewell came to Oregon
in 1927 to teach at Oregon State
College, Mr. Raynor came also
and operated the lunch conc’es
sion in the Memorial Union build
ing for two years, then joined the
regular army as a cook, where
he later became personal cook
for General Douglas MacArthur.
