Basketball’s Mere Tonight!! Duck-UW Hoop Filed SIX DUCKS WITH ONE THOUGHT IN MIND . . . . . . Beating Washington’s Huskies tonight anil Saturday has become the prime object in life for these half-dozen Webfoots, all of whom are certain to see service. From left: Bob Newland, long shot artist; Itolph Fuhrman, point-caging forward; Don Kirsch, captain and floor general; Bob Wren, rock-’em-sock Vra forward; Warren Taylor, tall and talented sharpshooter; right, Roger Wiley, elongated center. Oregon Quint Primed For Tonight's Contest Igloo Scene of are-up: 8 O’cloc By FRED BECKWITH Basketball action reaches a zenith tonight when the Wash ington Huskies square off against our Ducks at 8 p.m. in Mc Arthur Court. The first of a two-game weekend series finds varsity coach Howard '‘Hobby” Hobson’s league-leading nor thern division basketballers facing Hec Edmunson’s platinum plated Husky five. Despite Washington claims of superiority, Hobson, on the eve of the court war .stated that he was ‘'conceding nothing.” “We have as good a chance to win as they have. If the Huskies don't turn in a better brand of ball against us than they showed in the Oregon State series, they're in for an evening of trouble." Oregon will floor the same .darting five men who have per formed in the past five games: Bob Wren and Warren Taylor, forwards; Roger Wiley, center; Bob Newland and Captain Don Kirsch, guards. Subs to Show Certain to see plenty of action .are the following trio of melon tossers; Al Popick, Roy Seeborg, and Ralph Fuhrman. Hobson was well pleased with the work of Iiis subs on the recent Inland Em pire trip, in which tlie Ducks bagged three conference wins out < f a possible four games. Tiie Huskies, noted for their fast breaking offensive style of play will use a veteran-loaded quintet, including the following men: Ford and Gilbertson, for wards; Gilmur, center; Morris and Leask, guards. Chuck Oil sum and Doug Ford will bear the brunt of the attacking purple and gold forces. Tradition favors Oregon as the Ducks do not often lose to the Huskies in their own Eu gene locale. Cage boss Hobson opined that Washington State, whom Oregon „;plit with last week, is every bit as good a ball club, “and a def inite shade faster." Tonight's game will have im portant bearing on the confer ence standings. Should Oregon split with the Huskies, they would retain their hold on first place, but if Washington snares two wins from the green and gold basket tossers, the positions of the two teams will be reversed. “Hobby" has seen every five in the conference in action. And although he considers the season to be very young, he thinks that four of the five clubs are capa ble of emerging victorious in the coveted first place throne. Only Idaho does not, at this date, appear to have a look-in on a slice of championship cake. “The Vandals, however,” mused Hobson, “are capable of upsetting the apple cart of every team in the loop. And don't be surprised if they kick the dope bucket over more than once." The Oregon cage mentor open ly regards with amusement any odds that heavily favor the Wash ingtonians tonight. He describes his outfit as in an “uncertain stage.” "The younger boys are coming along fine. When the lettermen veterans hit their peak, we'll be hard to stop.” It is entirely possible that Hob son's prediction may come true on the pinewoods tonight. Wash ington State learned that Oregon was not a group of young men in shorts to be taken lightly. Wiley is high man, but in the matter cf game averages he must take a back seat to Don Durdan, Oregon State’s indispensible man of sports. The Beaver backcourt start has flipped in 29 points in two games—a 14.5 average. Third place falls to Warren Taylor, another Duck, with 26 markers to his credit. A two-way tie is evident for fourth with Bob Newland, Oregon, and Gail Bish op, Washington State, both with 24. Bishop's, however, came in two games, Newland’s in four.
