/ VtL*,
Apologies and a low, low bow
to the feminine portion of the
PE department. It seems they
took umbrage at an item in this
column last week. To the entire
PE department and Miss Jean
nette Neilson in particular we
wish to express our gratitude for
reading this humble column. Tf
we displeased them, OUR PUB
LIC, in any way, we are most
frightfully saddened to think that
we have alienated some of our
ardent readers.
But in the interests of the
privileges of a democracy, here is
our case for the defense: Admit
tedly ‘‘inactive," we resei-ve our
energies for grooming, intellec
tual pursuits, and an active con
cern with the arts. This does not
imply that the PE department
doesn’t do these things too—it
simply means that it takes so
much time for us to get our hair
up and all the books we want to
read finished that there just isn’t
time enough for GAMES! The PE
gals are obviously super-women.
Our case rests.

Not too many howls, please,
about no Thanksgiving holiday.
After all, the British don’t have
Thanksgiving holidays, and they
seem to survive pretty well.

To all the poor people who have
three midterms on one day, all
kinds of sympathy. In fact, to all
the people who have any mid
terms at all, more sympathy.
They really are a loathesome in
vention—such an unsubtle way of
letting the faculty know how lit
tle we know about everything!
And, now, a plug for an ex
tremely entertaining book, name
ly, Van Loons latest. ''Lives.” It’s
about a series of dinner parties
Van Loon and his friend gave for
famous people, one winter in
Veere, Holland, several years
ago. The guests include Erasmus,
George Washington, Queen Eliza
beth. and Montaigne, a very small
part of their long guest list.
There are bits of historical back
ground of each guest, all very
gaily related, and the comments
and reactions of the celebrities
are often quite unexpected. For
such pure fantasy, it is really
very well done, and worth an
evening or two, if there are to be
spared from higher education.
One of the boys from a sunnier
clime than ours was moaning the
other day that his hair had been
wet ever since he dashed to his
S o’clock that morning. Several
helpful and encouraging people
inquired if he REALLY thought
it had been raining, and if he
HONESTLY considered this cold?
One suggested a bandanna as the
solution of his problems.
He snorted, yes, he did, but per
haps lie'll get used to the rain,
etc., in four or five years. Practi
cally everyone does—don't they?
Conies January, comes the

campus departing for the wars.
