Homecoming
Slogan Tilt
Opens Today
The Homecoming slogan con
test will open at noon today, ac
cording to Pat Cloud, chairman.
This contest is staged annually
in order to find a prize-winning
slogan which will be the theme
of the weekend activities.
There will be a $5 prize for
the writer of” the winning entry.
The contest is open to everyone
and each person may write as
many slogans as he wishes.
These should be left at the alum
ni office for Cloud, or mailed to
him at 1472 Kincaid street as
soon as possible, but no entries
received later than noon Monday,
^October 19, will be accepted.
Slogans should be shqrt—3 or 4
‘■punch” words which will ex
emplify the spirit of Homecom
ing weekend. Last year’s win
ning entry was ‘‘Blitz the Bea
vers,” and was contributed by
Buck Buchwach.
Cloud suggests that the slo
gan be something in keeping
with the University and the part
it is playing in the war effort—
not all collegiate, not all patri
otic.
Judging the contest will be the
Homecoming weekend directorate
composed of the chairmen of each
major committee. The complete
directorate has not been appoint
ed, but will be announced tomor
row, stated Cloud.
In case of two identical entries
-the first one submitted and re
ceived will be the winning slogan.

City Seeks Volunteer
Scrap Iron Collectors
A call for 1000 volunteers was
voiced Wednesday by Eugene
city authorities. They are needed
to pick up the tons of iron and
tee! scrap that will be deposit
ed on street corners of Eugene
during the Saturday night noise
and scrap parade.
One hundred men students are
needed to fill the University quo
ta. These are to be drawn from
the ranks of the campus living
organizations, each house and
hall is asked to donate the serv
ices of four men.
They will work only on Sunday
morning, traveling in trucks to
the scrap piles throughout the
City.

To Brazilian University
In reply to the message sent to the students of the uni
versities of the United States by the University of Sao Paulo,
Brazil, Les Anderson, ASUO president, presented the reply of
the ASUO to Dr. Hernane Tavares de Sa, representative
of the University of Sao Paulo, during Dr. Tavares’ lecture
in Friendly hall last night. The text of the reply is as follows:
“To the students of the Uni
versity of Sao Paulo, we wel
come your message to us, and
desire to express our common
belief in the united frnt of
American republics.
Both Nations
“Now that both our great
nations are at war with a force
that threatens our freedom and
civilization, we feel that an
even greater friendship and
unity shoudl exist.
“We are fully in accord with
your belief that any foundation
must rest on the understanding
and comradeship of the young
men and women of our univer- .
sities.
“We join with you in such a
pledge of understanding and
comradeship.
“Signed,
“ASSOCIATED STUDENTS,
“UNIVERSITY OF OREGOlSr.”
The message will be printed on
parchment and sent to the medi
cal school at Sao Paulo.
Dr. Tavares, professor of biol
ogy at the University of Sao
Paulo, in his address stated that
Brazil would follow the words of
Horace Greely, “Go west, young
man, go wTest.” Brazil has highly
developed metropolitan areas, but
the outlying districts are hardly
developed.

grates, lamp bulbs, golf clubs,
plant stands, washboards, met
al hangers, notebook hinges,
kitchen utensils, and trophies.
Noise, Scrap to Be Judged;
Winning Houses Get Bonds
Contrary to previous information that no motor vehicles
were to be allowed in the University scrap iron noise parade,
one car or truck can be used by each campus organization for
the big event Saturday morning, according to Russ Hudson
and Ray Schrick, co-chairmen of the drive.

Artist Series Gets Under Way;
Adler, Draper Dance Monday

Different in the way of entertainment is the forthcoming
appearance of Paul Draper and Larry Adler, talented tap
dance and harmonica team, who will appear on the Univer
sity campus Monday, November 16, in the first 1942-43 Great
er Artist concert series.
The collaboration of Draper and Adler is of recent order,
for their debut in the concert
field may be said to date from
their Chicago recital in Decem
ber 1940.
Previous to this both had been
individual performers in the en
tertainment world.
Classic Choreographer
Paul Draper, who has created!
his own style of dancing, is said
to almost “tap the classics,” for
his original ballet type of tap

street next to the Oregon Elec
tric depot Saturday morning'.
Houses must show up for the
lineup between 10:15 and 10:30,
it was announced' by the two
chairmen.
Additional color will be added
to the gala occasion by the Uni
versity band which will march
up the parade line.
