Look Better
Pre-registration applications
from incoming freshmen indicate
slightly less than an earlier-pre
dicted 25 per cent drop in fall
enrollment, Clifford Constance,
assistant registrar, announced
this week.
Predictions for the one quarter
reduction were released by the
chancellor’s office after a study
of war efforts on the University
Spus. Enrollment last fall was
3444, and if this estimate holds
true, some 2600 will register.
“There is no actual way we
can predict definitely what will
happen,” Mr. Constance declared.
“Applications, however, do look
a little brighter than we had
originally hoped.”
Losses in graduate and upper
divisions are expected to be high
er than those for lower division
and incoming freshmen. Ths is

because of the greater number of
older students who are eligible
for war service.
University registrations in
creased steadily for a number of
years up till fall last year when
the effects of the draft and im
pending war were beginning to
be felt. Drop at that time was 7
per cent.
Mr. Constance urged new stu
dents as well as old to investigate
special army, navy, or marine
classifications which will allow
them to finish college and ulti
mately enter officers' training.
