Harp Recital Features Six UO Students The unusual feature abgut this evening’s harp recital at the mu sic auditorium is the size of the ensemble. Six harpists will be heard, the largest number ever to play before in the University. Commencing at 8:15 p.m„ Doris Hfjen Calkins .instructor in harp, will present her pupils, demon strating one of the oldest and loveliest of musical arts. Debussy W ork to Open Opening the program will be Claude Debussy’s “Dances Sacree et Profane.” Written in an im pressionist style, the piece is full of tonal color. Mrs. Calkins and the string quartet will perform this work. •Next is a group of works to be performed by the harp ensemble, consisting of Dorothy Bruhn, James Gibson, Lynn Alexander, Maxine Cunning, and Sally Calk ins. They will play: ^ “Bohemian Song” by Skroup; "Au Monastere” by Hasselmans; “Little Chinaman” by Smith; “Last Rose of Summer”; “Two Guitars” by Horlick. Concluding the program is Mrs. Calkins’ and the sextet’s per formance of Ravel’s “Introduc tion and Allegro.” Composed by the man who wrote “Bolero” and “Daphnis et Chloe,” this -work amplifies Debussy's impression istic formulae, and adds individu al quality and virtuosity. University Quartet Assists Assisting the ensemble will be the University quartet, whose Timbers are: Rex Underwood, professor of music, James Gibson, Verne Sellin, and Lora Ware, pro fessor of cello; and also assisting are Charlotte Allen, flutist, Dean Forbes, clarinetist, and Maja laine LeBeck, bass. Dr. C. H. Secoy of the University chemistry department is to present a paper on the sys tem chlorine monoxide-water. Dr. Secoy’s paper is the result of three years of research. Dr. Pierce Van Rysselberghe, assistant professor in chemistry, will present a paper on observa tions on the electro-chemistry of aqueous and non-aqueous solu tions of magnesium salts.
