Voters Select Court of Five The “difficult decision’’ of 1942 was made Thursday when, by popular vote, Eleanor Engdahl, junior in architec ture and allied arts, was named queen of Junior Weekend. Miss Engdahl will rule as “Stars and Stripes Queen” over the “Of Thee I Sing” canoe-feteless celebration. Phi Thetas Bid 29 Coeds Twenty-nine sophomore girls were pledged to Phi Theta Upsi lon, junior women's honorary at a general student body assembly Thursday morning. Newly elect ed officers were also installed as part of the program. The list of pledges, released last night by Barbara Hampson, Phi Theta vice-president follows: Phyllis Gray, Neva Haight, Betty Kincaid. Dorothy Routt, Jo Ann Supple, Mary Jane Terry, Rohda Harkson, Marge Curtis, Micki Mitchell, Katheryn Jen Gcins, Janet Ross. Mary Bentley, Micki Campbell, Helen Holden, Barbara Lamb. They are Margaret Sleeper, Dorothy Greer, Frances Cox, and Milodene Goss. Among the first eight who were chosen by the Weekend judges were also Louise Gordon, Carolyn Loud, and Doro thy Manley. First official duty of the new queen will be to preside at the junior class party, to be held Tuesday-night at 6:30 in Gerlin ger hall. No class cards will be needed to attend this party. Miss Engdahl was selected at an all-campus assembly after the decisions of judges made the pre vious night had been announced. Students voted on the first eight candidates which the judges chose. Great was the amazement of the publishing house when Dr. Theodore Kratt, dean of the mu sic school, wired for 400 copies of “The New Earth.” In fact, they found it incredible, and wired back, “Do you mean 40 copies?” but Dean Kratt stuck to his guns, and repeated the or der, which finally? arrived in full strength. “The rehearsals have been good,” said Dean Kratt, pushing back his hair from his pleasure in the great interest shown by the choral union class in the piece and expects it to have a wide spread effect on the musical in terest shown in the University. New Earth New to Oregon students, “The New Earth” was written by Hen ry Hadley, said Dean Kratt. Had ley, and American, died in 1937 after a varied musical career. He studied in Munich and Vienna; conducted the Seattle and San Francisco symphony orchestras; was leader of the Berkshire fes tival; was president of the na tional association for American Composers and Conductors; wrote operas, symphonies, and tone poems. Dean Kratt has selected Mar garet Zimmerman, Ray Leonard, and Lee Ghormley for the so prano, baritone, and tenor roles. The Eugene gleemen will sing' "O Winds of Strength,” one of the choruses of “The New Earth.” “The White Silence" by Nicola Montani will be sung by the fem inine members of the choral un ion under the direction of Dean Kratt. Accompanying the group will be Airs. Doris Calkins, harp instructor, at the harp, and Em ery Hobson at the piano. The performance will take place in McArthur court, Sunday, April 19, at S p.m. Admission to students is free. Rally to Snowball Highlighting today’s base ball opener, a snowball rally will start at the College Side at 2 p.m. The rally will visit every house on the campus and er.d up at Howe field. Dean Kratt will soon preside over “The New Earth,’’ given by the choral union. Warren May Fill Top Football Post King for a couple of days was Vaughn, Corley, second Oregon head football coach in as many, days to be given a commission in the United States Navy. Corley, who was line coach un til last Monday when the athletic board hoisted' him to fhe top berth, left the campus Thursday morning- for Portland, where ho was sworn in as a lieutenant, jurr ior grade, in the naval reserves. With him went Tex Oliver, who has headed the Duck coaching staff for the past four years. Tex Oliver Oliver recently accepted a com mission as lieutenant-commander in the navy and will report to Annapolis Monday for a month’j training period before taking over* the head football coaching post at the St. Mary’s naval aviation training- school in the California, bay region. John Warren, who has been freshman football coach for the past six years, is next in line fox* the head coaching job, according* lo local mentor experts. Warren was appointed assistant coach, taking Corley's place, last Mon day night, but his promotion to head coach will apparently not to automatic. The athletic board meets again next Monday night. The fate of Oregon's gridiron leadership should be decided at that time. In the meantime, the University ia coachless again. Norman Weiner Given Top Law School Spot Norman Weiner was ’elected president of the law school stu dent body at an 11 o’clock as sembly Thursday morning. Ho will replace Charles A. Phipps. Serving with Weiner will be John Veatch as vice-president and William Fiske Bernard as* secretary-treasurer. Leon F. Olra stcad was last year’s vice-presi dent with Norman Weiner secre-* tary-treasurer. New Greek Pledges Latest additions to Greclc pledge rosters are: Bill Dyer, D.
