Oregon needs you! Oregon’s
cvn.paigTi on the Pacific coast
gridiron needs recruits, and
previous college football com
pihtion is NOT a prerequisite,
which opens up the ranks to
the entire male population of
the student body.
Coach Gerald A. “Tex” Oli
ver will be on hand to meet all
those who desire to play var
sity football Tuesday, Febru
ary 24, at 4 p.m., in the dress
m
ing- rooms of McArthur court
(downstairs).
Reliable sources indicate
that there will be a lot of uni
forms to go around, uniforms
for everybody.—for those who
have played high school foot
ball but who haven’t contin
ued at the University, and for
those who have admired hec
tic sport from the grandstands
and have secretly wished that
they could actively partici
pate.

The two teams conclude hos

Corvallis.
Coming to life a few minutes
after the game started, the Frosh
started pouring in buckets from

Roy Seeborg pacing the attack.
Ducks Slow Down
The Duckling attack slowed
down somewhat in the second
half, and the Beav«r yearlings
started shaving > the lead. But
with the fans clamoring for the
“6Q" mark, the Ducklings re

that total.
After taking a 31 to 28 lead

Hoy, dark Yermuel! You listening Jack? Say, A1 Weiner,
wake that guy up, will you? Thanks. What in hell do you
think you're doing anyway, Jack . . . all this stuff about your
Rook Basketball Coach Bill MeKalip being the hero of the
McArthur court brawl last Saturday night (Barometer. Tues
day, February 17) . . . about MeKalip struggling gallantly
lirough the surging masses and yelling remnants of the Ore
gon band into playing the “Star Spangled Banner."
I don’t know from where the Barometer gets its informa
tion, but from all appearances, I can’t say much for both.
Of course that stuff is gobbled up by the Beavers ... it
bloats their collective egos. But what guff! Once, perhaps,
is pardonable. The Barometer, however, blandly makes it a
habit.
1 remember quite well when a little fracas erupted out of
a questionable decision called during an Oregon-Oregon State
baseball game on Ilowe field. I recall with nausea how the
Barometer, with jubilant piety, exclaimed that Beaver Leonard
.Volume was the hero of the incident, that he bravely pro
tected I’mpire Spec Burke, that he, Younce, was oh so modest
about the entire tiling and demurely refused to tell too lyueh
about his noble role in the affair. Pardon me while I vomit.
'. .. Get It Right'
i don't know whether you Barometer sports staff members
have ever heard of Ilearst’s IN’S, but that news service has a
particularly good slogan, to wit: “Get it first, but first, get
it right." Perhaps the Barometer would do well to flop ever
so-slightly out of its way and adopt the “get-it-right" portion
of that slogan.
Oh yea, what about that rather brazen statement some
one of you on the Barometer had leering out of the game
story? . . , the claim, shouting in very factual tone, that
the Oregon students initiated the riot, that Oregon stu
dents did this because they were mad at being behind in
the game.
Teh. nli. quit kidding yourselves. You know darned well

Basketball
Idaho beat Oregon's hoop
men, 38 to 36, in Moscow last
night, crept out of the North
ern division cellar, and left
the Webfoots in sole posses
sion of the league’s “booby
nest.’’
In Seattle, Washington pasted
Oregon State, 47 to 40, shoving
the Beavers one full game behind
the leagrue leaders, Washington
State, and pulling OSC down into
a tie for second place with the
Huskies.
Sub Stars
Two belated field goals by a
Vandal substitute, Norm Freedek
ring, clinched the game or Idaho
over Oregon. Idaho was trail
ing, 33 to 34, when Freedekring
dripped two goals through from
the floor, pulling the Vandals
past the Ducks; 37 to 34.
Immediately after, the Van
dals got another digit on a
technical, boosting their total
to 38. Itirsch then retaliated
with a field goal, but the clock
ran out before the Ducks could
score again.
Nineteen personal fouls and
three technicals were called
against Oregon, with Archie

Swimming
After drowning- San Jose
State college mermen yester
day, Oregon splashers dropped
a 37-to-38 decision to the San
Francisco Olympic club in San
Francisco last night.
Bill Lucas of the Olympic club
demonstrated that his title, “best
all-around swimmer on the Paci
fic coast," is no fluke, as he
splashed to three first places—the
220-, 440-, and 100-yard freestyle
events.
Oregon Cops Three Firsts
Oregon copped three firsts.
Chuck Nelson winning the 100
yard backstroke, and the Aqua
Ducks collaborating to cop the
300-yard medley and the 400-yard
freestyle relays.
Jack Robinson, sophomore
Oregon swimmer, splashed in
second behind Lucas in the
three races the Olympic club
star won.
Co-Captain Gerry Huestis
grabbed two thirds, in the 50- and
100-yard freestyle races, finish
ing behind Teammate Johnny
Mead in the 50 and behind Team^_
mate Robinson in the 100.

the thing' would have happened even if the spark were ignited
when or if Oregon were ahead. And I don’t think you’re
ignorant or naive to the point of not knowing why, although
you perhaps slam your eyes shut to the fact, or facts, what
ever they may be.
What About Purdy's Shot?
Then too, I don’t believe the Corvallis gym is especially
virgin where the breeding of minor or major riots is concerned.
Ask oldtimers what happened there to a referee when Webfo^t
Ken Purdy tossed in a last-second basket that beat the Beavers
some years back? What happened to the hapless referee when
lie ruled in favr of Oregon, that is; when he ruled that the
ball had been in the air before the gun went off?
I read your column in the Barometer, A1 Weiner, and I
agree that the McArthur court melee was not without its
share of humorous incidents. For the benefit of Beavers
who are rabidly intent upon condemning Oregon students,
who loudly insist that “we ought to just give them h—1
for it, ’ ’ we reluctantly print this little gem.
One of the Beaver ballplayers had his girl down in Eugene
for the game. She was sojourning at the Alpha Omicron Pi
house. When everything was over and she was being mildly
berated about the rather dubious court tactics of her very
masculine boy friend, she frowned: “Well, 1 know (so-and-so)
is a dirty player, but you've got to admit lie’s a darned good*”
one." A good dirty player or just a good player? Humorous
as all get out.
