    Co-eds Crave Gadgets
On Lists for Christmas
By MARY ANN CAMPBELL
For the exclusive purpose of brightening up your own life or
someone else’s, if you are in the throes of a burst of Christmas cheer,
or, mundane though it is, to help you along your way down your
Christmas list, here is a thought. The designers of compacts and
such-like, as well as the people who think up evening bags, haw
imu a suit oi neia any, ana pro
duced some amazing and yet ex
tremely practical bits of gadetry.
In the compact, cigarette case,
or campact-and-case-in-one de
partment you can find right
here in Eugene, without look
ing very hard, too, an astonish
ing affair which consists of a
cigarette case, a LARGE mirror,
rouge, lipstick, powder, coin
purse, and comb, and you could
get your front door key in, too,
if you try, all in one not espe
cially oversized container. It’s
made so the tobacco crumbs are
kept under control, too. It comes
in gold, with a design or jewels
on top.
Cigarettes Separate
If you prefer to have your
cigarettes separated from your
powder, you might take a look
at a set made of silver, with lit
^|le enameled flowers on it. The
cigarette case is standard, and
the compact is made in the shape
of an eighteenth-century snuff
box.
The Lipvue mirror is a little
round mirror on a small black
handle. On one side of the mirror
you see the daylight effect on
your face; on the other, what
you resemble after dark. The
handle has a lipstick in it, and a
place for powder. Yes, it IS
amazing, isn’t it"7 Oh, yes, it has
a little cloth bag ior a container.
Tailored Goods
On the more tailored side, sad
dle leather compacts and cases
are elegant, efficient looking,
and would be wonderful to carr>
with your tweeds. Also the new
Lucite cigarette cases, which
are transparent, amazingly light
and, according to legend, verj
durable, besides having the ad
vantage of being capable of hold
ing a whole pack of cigarettes
at one time.
One of the more charming oi
the new evening bags is made oi
strips of curled velvet arranged
in rows, to look like feathers
Its companions are of velvet
not made to look like feathers
but all decorated up with sequins
or gold roses.
If you get one with sequins
you also receive a sequin span
gle to wear in your hair; if you
acquire the roses, gold roses foi
the hair accompany it. Also
lame bags, sizable and inexpen

combinations shot through with
gold thread.

cents. Many students can obtain
them from their parents.
First aid training, treatment
of burns, fire control and rescue
work were discussed at the coun
cil meeting. It is proposed that
the University offer training in
general first aid and make the
courses available to all students.
Further action on first aid
measures will be carried on next
term.
Fire Drills
The council discussed fire pre
vention, evacuation of certain
hazardous buildings and fire
were discussed and plans made
for drills both in campus build
ings and in living organizations.
Available air raid shelters were
investigated and there was some
talk about the heating tunnels
and their use in case of raids.
Further investigation is neces
sary before they can be definitely
decided upon.
A bureau of central informa
tion was planned. This would
contact living organizations in
case of blackout deadlines and
keep files of casualty lists and
general information for the cam
pus.

Blackout Laws Asked
Oregon cities are requesting
sample blackout ordinances from
the bureau of municipal research,
according to Mary C. Soranson,
secretary. Cascade Locks, Med

Southern Pacific Lines reports
that no Japanese will be allowed
to ride on trains and busses any
where in the United States un
less he can show his birth cer
tificate or other document prov
ing his citizenship.
Only after they have proved
they are native born or natural
ized American citizens will Japa
nese be allowed to draw money
from the banks of the country or
move from their present loca
tion. Japanese aliens, of which
there is only one on the campus,
are in imminent danger of ap
prehension by police or federal
agents.
Mr. Constance pointed out
Wednesday that Japanese stu
dents were having trouble prov
ing their citizenship since they
cannot open their safety deposit
boxes to get their birth certifi
cates. Japanese-Americans are
obviously going to have a hard
er time as they are more con
spicuous than a European enemy
would be, he said.
