LONGHORN
Pete Layden, Texas halfback.
I^ayden is a member of the Long
horn herd that ravaged the South
west for weeks before an under
dog Baylor rose to tie them and
Texas Christian bowled them
over. Layden is a hard-running,
accurate passer, and better than
par punter. He’ll be trying plenty
of bull-dozing tackles against

Cutler Sweeps
Handball: Wins
Singles Crown
Chuck Cutler made it a clean
sweep in all-campus handball
yesterday when he beat Jim
Rathbun, 21 to 17, 21 to 13, to
win the singles crown. Cutler had
previously teamed with Bobby
Blair to cop the doubles title.
Yesterday’s match was the
toughest Cutler had played to
date. He had marched through
the earlier without meeting
much competition, and with
out dropping a game.
Play in the golf and tennis
competition has been stymied for
the last week by rain but has
reached the finals and is ex
pected to be finished as soon as
weather permits.
Ping-pong Singles
The ping-pong doubles is com
pleted with Norm Wiener and
Bob Whitely the champs. Whitely
will be out for a double killing in
the sport when he tangles with
Irvin Mann in the singles finals.

‘B’ League Tilts
Intramural volleyball hit the
playoffs yesterday with a banrr,
and sparks were still flying when
the play was over. The “A” teams
from the Phi Delts, ATOs, and
Sigma Chis advanced over the
first rung of the playoffs with
well earned victories, while the
“B” teams of the DUs and the
ATOs were also hanging up wins.
Phi Delts Win
The Phi Delts, defending
"*schamps, won a classic from a de
termined DU team. Led by Ed
Niklas and Jack White, the DLJ
team swept through a hapless
Phi Dolt team in the first game,
35 to S. They grabbed a lead in
the second game and seemed on
the way to a win when the Phi
Delts came to.
Behind the sparkling play of
Gabby Galbreaith, the Phi Delts
evened lip the score and then
moved ahead to win the sec
ond one, 15 to 13, The last
game was a nip and tuck af
fair with the defending champs
finally grabbing the decision,
15 to 11.
Galbreaith played marvelous
ball, blocking shots perfectly and
flamming unstoppable spike
shots.
Sweethearts Victorious
The Sigma Chi combination of
Chuck Thompson and Dick Burns
was a little too much for Ossie
Rejfield and his SAEs, as the
‘Sweetheart” boys walked off
with the decision, 15 to 12, 15
15 to 9.
The ATOs eliminated the
Theta Chis from the playoffs
with a convincing 15 to 4, 15 to
8 win. Bill Huggin and Ox Wil
son took over the offensive
task f«* the ATOs and were
more than enough to beat the
Theta Chis.

DUs were shaky in the first
game, dropping it, but got started
in the second one behind the play
of Bill Leahy and Ron Dilling,
to win.
The final game turned into a
tight tussle with the score see
sawing back and forth. It was
dueced dt fifteen all but the
DUs won two points in a row
to grab the game.
The ATO “B” team won from
Sigma hall by default.

Crain, Layden Spearheads
Of Vaunted Texan Attack
By WALLY HUNTER
University of Oregon’s Texas-bound Webfoots stopped off in Tucson
Arizona last night long enough for the University of Arizona to fete
the Ducks and their mentor, Tex Oliver.
Today the Austin-conscious Oregons will whip off in the direction
of El Paso, Texas, and from there to the home of the fearsome Uni
versity of Texas Longhorns. The Ducks are expected to come to rest
in Austin Friday.
Biggest questions about the
Webfoot squad is the condition of
Halfback Tommy Roblin, Oliver’s
breakaway specialist. The shoul
der that “Terrible” Tommy in
jured in the Oregon State game
is still in the questionable state.
It is doubtful if he will be able
to participate in the festivities.
Texas Star-Studded
When the Ducks hit the trail in
pursuit of the wild and woolly
Longhorn it would help no end
if every man on the squad were
in good physical condition. Coach
Dana Bible has under his wing
one of the most star-studded ag
gregations that has ever lugged
the colors of the University of
Texas into battle.
Burnished spearpoint of the
Steer attack is a chubby whip
pet named Cowboy Jack Crain.
The Cowboy’s amazing ability
to change his pace in the flicker
of an eyelash has had would-be
tacklers groveling in the turf
all season.
His free - wheeling victory
sprints have been an earmark of
f
nearly every Longhorn victory
this season. Crain besides being
one of the most feared runners in
the nation also quick kicks and
passes with the cream of the
crop.
Layden Triple-Threater
After Crain loosens up the de
fense with his defense-blinding
runs, in steps John Peter Layden,
Steer captain. Big Pete clutches
the ball firmly in both hands and
then proceeds to make gaping
holes in the defense. Layden be
sides being a line shredder de luxe
possesses the finer qualities of a
triple threat back. His picking
and long passes have been one
of the outstanding features of
football played the Texas way.
In the line—but not hidden
even a little by the lustrous
backs, Crain and Layden — is
chunky Chal Daniels. Daniels
has a “sitting room only” sign
tacked on the front of his hel
met, and that is where the op
posing linemen usually finds
himself at the end of a play—
sitting.
