ATOs Nip Theta Chis, 1 to 0; Grab Finals Spot Flashing a beautiful, short passing attack the ATOs roared up and down the field all after noon but could not penetrate the tight Theta Chi defense after they reached the 10-yard line. -s After threatening in every quarters the ATO attack ran up 28 yards in the overtime period to win the game. A1 Rouse started the extra period with a 20-yard gallop after snagging a flat pass from Paul Bocci. Bocci’s pass to Brown picked up four and Dunn added another four on a flat pass. The Theta Chis were smoth ered after making five yards on a run. The hard charging ATO line dumped Joe Wicks for a loss to end the game. The ATOs piled up a huge margin in the statistics, but the fighting Theta Chi defense ftfrew them back every time they neared the promised land. Chuck Heiner, Theta Chi end, spent most of the afternoon as the fifth man in the ATO back field until he was injured in the fourth quarter. He suffered a sprained ankle and several pulled ligaments. The Theta Chis almost pulled the game out of the fire in the dying minutes of the game when Wilson lateraled to Bunny Potts for what seemed to be a touch down, but the referee ruled that Wilson was down before he threw the pass. The Sig Eps opened with a bang, scoring on the second play of the game. Working from a peculiar rocker shift Fred Warren heaved a long pass to Morrie Soloman for the touch down. All through the second and third periods the Sig Eps knocked at the Sammie goal line but they couldn’t push the pig skin across. Late in the fourth period the Sammies began to roll. Led by the amazing broken field run ning of Bob Hasson, the Sam mies raced to the Sig Ep five yard line. The attack bogged down and the Sig Eps took over. When they failed to gain, Hannon dropped back to kick and Sammie “Tiger” Fulop broke through, blocked the punt, and fell on the ball in the end zone to tie the score. In the overtime period the Sig Eps gained four yards and had the Sammies on their heels with only one down left. Then the Sammies pulled Tex Oliver’s “bootleg reverse” out of the dark ness, when Wienstien snatched the ball from Hasson and raced 60 yards to a touchdown and vic tory. IRENE DUNN and ROBERT MONTGOMERY in * 'UNFINISHED BUSINESS' . —— The lead see-sawed throughout the game, which saw the largest rooting sections lining the floor this season and vociferously urg ing their teams, both evenly matched, on. It was only in the final min utes that the ADPis were able to forge ahead and eventually win. ZTA Triumphs Zeta Tau Alpha trounced an Alpha Xi Delta team last night by a lopsided 34 to 13 score. The ZTAs opened with a scoring burst and were never headed throughout the entire contest. Although overwhelmed, the Alpha Xi Deltas showed pros pects of becoming serious con tenders for the WAA crown as round robin action roars down the stretch. Bob Signer started the win ning drive with a series of short passes to the midfield stripe. Then a tremendous heave to Aubrey Cromwell in the end zone scored the winning touch down. Mermen Chum Off Good Times By DON RICHARDSON Just a little patter on the do ings over at the men’s pool these autumn days: The results of yesterday’s 220 yard free style and 150-yard backstroke speed time trials were very acceptable to Swimming Coach Mike Hoyman. Naturally he expected a fairly good show ing, but the boys went him one better by zipping down the lanes in exceptional early season times. Meads Shows Well Sophomore Johnny Meads, who has only been out for about a week, astounded everyone by his showing. Ralph Huestis is look ing better day by day and prom ises to be a definite threat in the breaststroke event. Chuck Nel son, versatile backstroke and freestyler, looked plenty smooth in his 150. Bob Irvin and Jack Robinson, each futilely tried to outdo the other. And last, nut not least, the tried-and-true lettermen. Cub Callis ran through 150 yards in his best form to date. Jerry Huestis bowed to his brother, Ralph, in the breaststroke by a split second. The two Dicks, Allen and Smith, turned in vastly improved performances over last week. COMING !!
