THIRD AND FINAL SCORE HI-frlPuEV 1 L TROJANS I Webfocts Break Trojan Hex Ducks Topple Twenty-Six Year USC Supremacy; Plaster Foes By Overwhelming 20 to 6 Count By WALLY HUNTER Come listen to a story, friend. It’s a story about a University of Oregon football team that in a period of 26 years has made ten pilgrimages to the gates of Troy, in hopes of gaining a victory from the fabulous football teams of Southern California. For all of these long years the victory-starved Webfoots had only one crumb from the overlad en table of the Trojans—this by way of a 7 to 7 tie in 1939. Then came the day when the USC head man faded from the picture for eve'r. At the same time the Ore gons’ oft-beaten Duck walked alone. It was again time for the Webfoot to take his beating—but the bunch of little guys coached by Tex Oliver had other ideas. They went to Troy all right but instead of waiting on the thresh old for an engraved invitation— they bored in and pasted a 20 to 6 licking on the numbed Trojans that made reverberations all over the Pacific slope. USC toppled OSC It was this same Southern Cal ifornia that two weeks earlier had knockedf the props from un der Oregon State. If this doesn’t -mean anything in particular re rnember that it was OSC that crumbled the mightiest pillar of football in the coast conference, in turning back Stanford. Of course there are those wise boys who will point to the 33 to 0 beating handed SC by a terrific Ohio State club and say that the Oregon victory was nothing to wire home about. But this kind Believe It or Not DON'T GUESS CALL JESS GODLOVE The Plumber 31 East 7th Ph. 547 of reasoning leaves a few of the important facts out. Oregon’s line coach, Manny Vesiez, is of the opinion that Paul Brown’s boys were pointing for the game and they slipped a “Mickey” to Barry’s men and from then on it was clean sailing. They also forget to remember that Oregon lost to Stanford on a tinder dry turf that was ideal for that T stuff. No one will try to belittle the Oregon State win over Stanford, nor will they try to deny the advantages of damp grounds when the Cardinals come to town. Since 1931 the scores of Ore gon-Southern California football games read like the numbers on a convict’s back. Starting with the modern era in 1931 and skip ping 1935 when the teams didn’t play the scores read: 53-0, 33-0, 26-0, 33-0, 26-0, 34-14, 31-7, and 7-7. Lon Stiner’s determined Ore gon State Beavers ended the reign of the T-formation in the Pacific Coast conference with a 10 to 0 defeat over the Stanford Indians, who lost their first game under the mentorship of Clark Shaughnessy. Stanford-OSC Had any pre-season expert con ceded the Indians a chance of los ing a game this year, the Beav ers would have been the last team given the possibility of beating them. But the Orange upset the dope, and not on a fluke, either. The inspired Beavers outfought, outcharged, outmaneuvered, and outplayed the Indians during the entire conflict. The respects of the entire nation were shadowed on Lon Stiner and his team. It seems to be a habit with Stiner to end long victory streaks, for it was his famous Iron Man eleven which brought Southern Cal's string of 26 consecutive victories to an end in 1933. By virtue of their win, the Beavers are now tied for first place with two wins and one defeat. The University of Oregon likewise ended a streak, in this case a losing streak, as the Webfoots at long last managed to beat Southern California, for the first time since 1915. Mecham Praised Tex Oliver’s Ducks whipped the Trojans decisively by a score of 20 to 6. Curt Mecham, YVeb 'foot halfback, reaped the praises of the California newsmen for his spectacular play against the Tro jans, as he paced Oregon to its win. At Pullman, the University of Washington and Washington (State renewed their football feud, and in a wild and woolly contest ^he Huskies downed their intra state rivals by a score of 23 to 13. The Cougars made a game of it and were leading at the half, but the “hard luck” Huskies over came the lead and nabbed their first victory of the season. Santa, C ara rests as the only . major unbeaten team in the West, after adding California on their beaten iist, by winning over the Bears by a 13 to 0 shutout. U.C.L.A. defeated Montana by a score of 14 to 7 in a game that does not count in the conference standings. University of Idaho Frosh 'Guinea Pig’ For Tex’s Squad Oregon’s Ducklings resumed their role of cannon fodder for the varsity yesterday as practice rolled into the last week before the Oregon State Rook game Fri day night in Portland. The frosh first string started against the varsity in a game scrimmage. Early in the practice Tex Oliver sent the first string to the showers and the yearlings worked against the second and third teams for the remainder of the afternoon. Almost all of the frosh squad saw action in the scrimmage The remainder of the squad worked on dummy scrimmage plays on the lower practice field. Assistant Coach Don Mabee ran the hacks through an in ten. sive drill on b’oeking and run ning assignments. The passers were heaving the ball from sev eral formations as the team pre pared a varied offense for the opening game. Bob Donrely, Bill Davis, Bob Reynolds, and Johnny Garrison compose the top backfield quartet Cote, Lyman Glascow, and Jack Willis form another backfield unit that has worked well in scrimmage. uncovered some of its “razzle dazzle” and knocked over its tra ditional rival, Gonzaga, by a score of 21 to 7, in another non round robin conflict. The race for conference cham pionship now looms as a wide open affair, since every team has lost a game, and every team, ex cept California, has won a con ference game.
