Mermen Drill
For Form
Every Oregon “pigger” has
known that uneasy and hopeless
feeling that comes about 10:29
when he is suddenly aware that
he has about five blocks and one
minute to get his date in on time.
His condition fast approaches
that of panic.
So it goes with swimmers,
avers Mike Hoyman, varsity and
freshman swimming mentor, only
in a different sense. Many times
a swimmer, no matter how good
he is, at the sight of a stop-watch,
literally goes to pieces. He loses
control of his speed and form and
does just about everything he
was taught not to do.
“One of the purposes of early
season training,” says Mike, “is
to overcome these stop-watch
panics so that by the time the
regular season rolls around every
one will float along with the
greatest of ease as though there
never was a stop-watch made.”
This Friday, October 10, Hoy
Hjan will put his charges through
their first time trial of the sea
son with the hope that they will
show him some of that all-im
portant form and in addition, a
little speed.

The rules for touch football will
be the same as in last year’s

Jof forfeits, any team that fails
to appear at the appointed place
within ten minutes will be de

expected to bring the games clos
er to schedule and thereby save
valuable time.

Jurkovich Lost
To Berkeley Bear
The California Bears received
still another blow to their title
hopes, when their star halfback,
Jim Jurkovich, was barred from
further participation in football
by the team’s physician.
When the Bears were all but
knocked out of the title race by
Washington State’s 13 to 6 vic
tory last Saturday, Jurkovich
was also “picked” for the first
time this year, but not for the
first time in his grid career. La9t
season this splendid back was
quite frequently carried out of
clashes feet first.
Following his latest injury, a
complete medical examination
was called, with physicians claim
ing that further competition in
football might result in serious
and perhaps permanent injury to
Jolting Jim.
So “Stub" Allison will have his
work cut out for him to find a
replacement for his star back in
time for the tough Santa Clara
tiff coming up this weekend.
Staples Back at Desk

Hoopmen Stress
Offensive Drills;
Wintermute Aids
Offensive drill, with particular
stress on shooting, was the key*
note of yesterday’s hoop prac
tice, as Howard Hobson sent his
casaba hopefuls through their
paces at McArthur court.
Urgel “Slim” Wintermute, All
American center of Oregon's na
tional championship team of
1938, is assisting Hobson with the
coaching duties. He is devoting
his attention to centers.
Included on the squad are six
lettermen, who are slated to
form the nucleus of the team.
Heading the list of returning vets
is George “Porky” Andrews,
whom Webfoot followers predict
is the man to continue Oregon’s
All-American streak, and add his
name to the list that now includes
“Slim” Wintermute, Bobby Anet’,
“Laddie” Gale, John Dick, and
Vic Townsend. The other hold
overs are Paul Jackson, Ralph
Fuhrman, Archie Marshik, Don
Kirsch, and Warren Taylor.
Frosh Drill t
Freshman basketball candi
dates also drilled under the tute
lage of Hobson, who is hand
ling the mentoring duties of
both teams while John Warren
is occupied With frosh football.
The yearlings will continue
their practice sessions for the
remainder of this week and all
of next, before recessing until
regular hoop practice begins
later in the term.
The present, drills, for which
the hoop candidates receive phy
sical education credit, are being
held to give an indication of the
prospective basketball talent.
Hobson has been drilling the
frosh cagers on fundamentals,
and scrimmages are slated for
the near future. Over 40 hoop
sters, one of the largest turn
outs in Oregon history, have
been reporting for practice regu
larly.
Wilson college has begun prep
arations for the celebration in
1944 of its seventy-fifth anniver
