Radio Workshop To Present Drama Next Thursday evening the University Radio Workshop will present a drama, entitled "And Their Dreams Came True.” It will be broadcast from the campus over KOAC during the regular student hour from 7:30 to 8:30. The play is a story of the founding of the University of Oregon. Judge Deady, then pres ident of the board of regents, made the first commencement address in Deady hall. Excerpts from this speech will be used in the play. The story traces the de velopment of a university and Carries the audience through the first session of school. There were 80 students registered at that time. Some of the first rules of the campus will be mentioned. | Berniece Frenetovich, a trans fer from Marylhurst college, will ling several operatic numbers. Wallace Bullard will accompany ler at the piano and also play several solo numbers. A number of Columbia Work shop plays will be broadcast from ;ime to time over this student lour. - - Activity Guide Book Receives Approval Approval of the executive com mittee last Friday night promot ed Steve Worth’s activity guide book from a mere idea to a pro ject. The booklet will be ready for publication within the next two weeks. Gerry Huestis will be in charge of the coordination committee which will consist of Gerry Mc Crosky, Tom Boyden, Ann Rey nolds, Hal Locke, and Ty Hutch ins. Bob Frazier has been named editor of the book and he will choose his own committee in the near future. The purpose of the book will be to point the way to activities for all students to have no other way of finding out what activi ties are open, what the require ments of the jobs are, and what are the various qualifications de sired by applicants for each po sition. Local YMCA Executives To Get Together Tonight The University YMCA advis ory board and the city YMCA board will meet tonight at 6:15 i o’clock in the Y hut for a buffet supper and business meeting. Dan Bacot, student secretary of the University YMCA, said that plans discussed for an open house policy on week days. Plans call for the hut to be open from 7 in the morning till 10 at night, Bacot said. On Sundays the hours will be from 2 till 6 in the after noon. Part of the city YMCA pro gram will be the maintenance of an information bureau to help strangers find rooms and jobs. Mr. Staff Reigns In Leisurely Post As Ghost Professor Mr. Staff—grand old man of the faculty—drew requests from freshmen this year just as he has done every year since year sched ules, catalogs, and prankish up perclassmen invaded the tall fir campus. According to reliable reports, five Ducklings ardently bent on pursuing English literature, etc., decided that this hoary genius, who teaches everything from phi losophy to typesetting, should be the all-around scholar they saw pictured in the paper with an Oxford robe on his shoulder and a degree from Heidelberg clutched in one pale hand. Alas, poor Professor Staff will just have to keep on taking a cussing until some linotype man has a heart and puts “X” for un known profs. University YMCA Opens Annual Dtive The University YMCA is be ginning its annual membership drive, according to Dan Bacot, student secretary. The purpose of the organization, Bacot stated, is to promote study, discussion, church attendance, and general social well being among students. There are several discussion groups ranging from world af fairs to various types of campus problems. Those interested in membership may see Dan Bacot any afternoon in the Y hut, he said. Broadway Two Greek Houses Victims of Theft Two campus fraternities. Phi Kappa Psi and Kappa Sigma, were victims of theft Friday night, September 19. The Kappa Sigma house was robbed of clothing and books be tween 7:30 and 12 while the mem bers were attending the Hello dance. Don Cawlee lost a two year letterman sweater. A yellow sport jacket, books, and a green overcoat were stolen from other men in the house. Sometime after 3 a.m. the Phi "Psi house lost $300 in bills that the boys had left in their rooms as they slept on the sleeping porch in the back of the house. Two watches were stolen, one from the dresser of a guest, Dr. Harry Beckwith as he slept. No other articles or house funds were missing. According to one of the Phi Kappa Psi house members the burglary seemed to indicate a systematic plan, as none of the rooms were disturbed or no loose change was taken. May, business manager of the Emerald, announced the appointments of four students to the business staff Monday. They are Warren Roper, soph omore in business administration, national advertising manager; Dave Holmes, sophomore in jour nalism, circulation manager; and Alvera Maeder, sophomore in business administration, and Le ota Whitelock, junior in arts and letters, classified advertising managers. Practice Called For Hoopsters Coach Hobby Hobson yesterday issued the first call for fresh man and varsity basketball play ers. The varsity is scheduled to practice daily at 4:15 p.m. and \ the fresh will workout at 3 p.m. until further notice. Hobson Handles Both Both squads will be coached by Hobson until the end of football season. At this time John Warren will take over the frosh squad. The first three weeks will be devoted to fun damentals anu light practice sessions. Coach Hobson urges all men interested in basketball to re port at this time. The early^ prac tices will aid the coaches in or ganizing the teams for the 1941 42 season.
