'Sweet Music'Does Not Soothe All Souls By MARY ANN CAMPBELL. Music may have charms to soothe the savage etc. but certain kinds of tone combinations can produce emotions that could not be called soothing by the greatest stretch of the imagination. The trouble is that so many people like different kinds of music. Erayna Is Modern For instance, there is Erayna, who is a wonderful modem dancer ana can interpret anyimng irom young carrots to Woman Fleeing Fate, but is a frantic addict of the more radical modern com posers. If you make the mistake of going to see her, she will force you to spend the entire evening in a half-light with great chunks of Shostakovich and Stravinsky and Bela Bartok whirling into your ears with absolutely NO chance of conversation. Not that it isn’t very interesting to hear these composers, but Erayna takes such unholy delight in ex plaining the tremendous signifi cance of it all and how expres sive this great manifestation of an art form seems to be. Erayna at her worst, though, is preferable to Jinny, who feels all music begins an,d ends Right There in Duke Ellington. While her records fill the night with dis cord, Jinny simply MUST express the rhythm in her soul with lit tle snappings of the fingers and shufflings of the feet and wheez es, intended to give vent to the great primitive emotions induced by the throbbing drums and long drawn-out wails of the band. Alice Likes Classics Or, have you ever settled down for a bit of studying, only to have sweet and amiable Alice, who is such a darling you couldn’t pos sibly be cranky to her, turn on the radio. Suddenly, there come strains of the Liebestraum soul fully played on an organ, with tremendous amounts of feeling. You automatically reach for the dial, when Alice murmurs, “Ah, don’t turn it off. I like classical music.” You gargle, ‘‘Do you? How sweet!” as your nerveless hand drops to your side. But the peculiar fondness the women's part of the physical ed ucation department has for that nasty little tune entitled “Scat terbrain” is the worst of all. Either some kind soul should do nate another easy tune to the gym classes or some kinder soul will just take a pistol and hack the piano to bits with an ax. The piano needs tuning, anyway.
