Canadian Army Life
Thrills California Lad
By TED GOODWIN
Full of yarns about the Cana
dian army and the first Scotch
battalion of Canadian infantry
with which he served since No
vember, R. B. St. Evens, former
California prep school student,
was the guest of Wish Brown at
the DU house Tuesday night.
With a flair for adventure, the
California youth joined the bat
talion last fall and has withdrawn
to join the Royal Canadian air
force. His picturesque plaid
cap need come off, "only for the
queen. But, there are lots of
queens,” he laughed.
The first night in conditioning
camp was annoying, he remi
nisced, in that he was ordered to
bed down in a field six inches
deep with mud. As he stood hold
ing his blanket and ground sheet,
an officer heard his beefing and
growled, "Lay down or stand up,
this is where we camp!”
Two Oaths
On joining the Canadian forc
es all non-citizens must take two
oaths, first, the oath of allegiance
to the king which cancels Amer
ican citizenship, and second, the
oath to fight for Canada for the
duration of the war.
When St. Evens tried to enter
the United States for a 15-day
leave, the customs officers held
him for five to check on his cit
izenship.
Kilts Go Down
The traditional kilts of his bat
talion, formerly the sixteenth
Scottish, were sunk with the
Athenia en route to Canada. His
air force uniform will be sky
blue. The air force includes about
25 per cent Americans and there
are about 10 per cent in the reg
ular army, he said.
Already wounded, the adven
turous youth was reluctant to
mention the casualty but finally
revealed that his foot* was in
jured by a hand grenade explo
sion. He had been showing re
cruits how it was done, he admit
ted, when one lit near him. Since
they are lethal within 25 yards,
he dived into a nearby trench. The
explosion took off the sole of his
shoe and skinned his foot. His
comment was that if he had gone
into the trench feet first, he
probably would have come out
that way.
In the Future
His training with the air
force will begin April 18, and will
last for about seven months. He
intends to become a pilot-observ
er. This rank entails more train
ing than that of gunner or pilot
and pays better, he said.
His attention-claiming cap, he
grinned, is a sure thing for
hitchhiking. It is blue with a sil
ver crest and a plaid band. The
two black ribbons down the back
are what turns the trick, he
joked.

Bonneville Project
To Create Market
For New Industry
By MARY WOLF
The purpose of the Bonneville
power project is for the develop
ment of a new economy in this
region, declared Dr. Paul J. Ra
ver, Bonneville power project ad
ministrator, in a speech at the 11
o’clock assembly in Gerlinger hall
Thursday morning.
He stated that fundamentally
this is a marketing program,
which is trying to sell the power.
Diversion of Profits
“Instead of profits going to ab
sentee stockholders in New York
they will go into the creation of
new markets, for the products of
new industry, as well as into still
lower wholesale and retail rates
for electricity,” he said.
Dr. Raver outlined the inter
pretation of the policies laid
down by congress in the Bonne
ville act and the methods used to
carry out those policies. The pol
icies were that it was a public
power, regional, and a low rate
program.
Light Metal Industries
He continued by saying that
electricity is the key to the de
velopment of light metal indus
tries.
“The Northwest has the great
est opportunity in this field than
any place in the whole world,”
he said.
Dr. Warren D. Smith of the
geography and geology depart
ments, presided at the meeting.
A baritone horn solo, “Corinthian
Polka” by Losey, was played by
Lois Ginther, accompanied by
Geraldine Walker.
Corps Commander

and drill.
Colonel Crafton will not be
