speech department and adviser for

sions on "The American Way,”
dealing with the historical philos

the building by John McGregor,
Bartholomew's successor in 1922.
Shortly before, Prince L, Camp
bell, University president from
1902 to 1925, had inaugurated a
proposed $10,000,000 gift campaign
which had as its aim a "greater
Oregon.” President Campbell’s pro
gram was planned to provide need
ed improvements and equipment
and to place the University on a
par with eastern and European
colleges.
Incorporated In ’2-1
In 1924 the student union idea
was incorporated into the gift cam
paign, and an all-campus drive was
organized to obtain pledges of $10
annually from student and alumni
donors for a 10-year period. More
than $200,000 was pledged, and
erection of the desired building
was thought near.
Enthusiasm gradually waned,
however, and only $20,000 was col
lected. Of the remaining $180,000,
