PATRIOTISM PLUS America Is Theme For Spring Colors By MARY ANN CAMPBELL Ladies, today we are happy to present to you one of your old favorites, a marvelous standby who has been more or less in retire ment for some time now, but now is playing return engagements to packed houses. Ladies, we present Navy Blue! Navy blue, which has been in the background while her more eccentric sisters held the spotlight, comes forward again in all her glory. Navy appears with rose, with copen, with all shades of green, in fact there is no color, except brown, navy doesn’t appear with. Number two favorite is biegc, which appears with lots of empha sis on the American cowboy motif. In fact, America, both north and south, is the basic idea be hind most of the color combina tions. Red, white and blue is all over the place, and saddle tan, ro deo biege, warpath red, totem yel low, California sun, palm tree green and Florida pink are just a few of the names. For the British, we will see quite a lot of RAF blue, which has the gray tinge seen in the Royal Air force uniforms. Another martial theme is noted in Marine Corps blue, which has less of gray tone. Island turquoise, a grayish tur quoise, is good, and crater blue is another shade of the same theme. The biege goes all the way from palest coffee-with-cream through bronze to dark blown. Kelly green pops up frequently, and there is a new blue green, not unlike the teal blue of a few sea sons back, that has charm. Sweaters come in apple green, heaven blue, baby pink, and spring apple red, a rose color that has definite OOMPH. One of the prettiest color com binations to be seen in the shops around town is a yellow and grey herringbone tweed fitted coat that had a screaming scarlet and gold patriotic emblem embroidered on the arm. Only Pastels Present Note of the Feminine By JOEY CHRYSTALL There aren't so many frilly, feminine touches in evidence this year. Our impression of spring term last year was made up rather largely of bows in the hair, ruffled pinafores, white lace blouses, and so on, with almost always at least one flower. Now all the smartest looking outfits seem to have been made up to a certain extent from a man’s shop. There is a decided rise in the popularity of boys' jackets, ; and lots of people we’ve talked to have a yen for a boy’s sweater, the kind that almost looks like cashmere. Also in this vein, we've seen less Peter Pan collars above sweaters, and more of the type ! with pointed lapels. We think the feminine touch is also being replaced by the military influence. Who could help think ing so after a glimpse of the store windows about town? You can have your military influence in a belted coat, like an officer’s trench coat, or in a smartly-swinging cape, or by having stars and eagles I scattered about on your hat, I gloves, purse; you don't have to be particular. Or you can be for the navy, with sailor collars, white braid, and anchors. Having not yet seen anything in the nature of men’s jackets in roobin s egg blue, we assume, a lit-^ tie defiantly, that women still have pastels. Although the colors of uniforms; Sandringham blue, biege (like khaki), navy, etc., are in great favor, we’ve seen some lovely pastel plaids and some beau tiful pale sweaters and coats, so we haven't yet given up hope for the exclusively feminine fashions.
