Idaho Nine Defeats
Touring Ducks, 2-1
By TOM COX
UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO, Moscow—May 10—(Special to Em
erald)-—University of Oregon’s varsity baseball team dropped a tight
ball game to Coach Forrest Twogood’s Idaho Vandals here today,
2 to 1, on the first tilt of its Inland Empire road journey.
It was a close mound duel all the way with A1 Linn for Oregon op
posing Max Stoddard. Both pitchers yielded seven hits and the Idaho
twirler whiffed six men to two
for Pitcher Linn of the Webfoots.
The game wasn’t settled until
the ninth inning when Roy Ram
'ey, Vandal second baseman, made
a great catch of Pinch Hitter
Arba Ager’s line smash to com
plete an unassisted double play
on Cece Walden who was trapped
off base.
Stoddard Tough
Stoddard proved hard to hit in
the pinches and 10 Oregon run
ners were marooned on base. The
Vandals took a 1 to 0 lead in the
last half of the first inning only
to have Oregon tie it up in the
first of the second frame. The
clubs then went through four
scoreless innings before the win
ners w’ere able to push over the
deciding tally. That was in the
seventh.
Buck Berry and Bill (Whizzer)
White each collected two hits for
Oregon and White and Jack
Shimshak collected a double and
a triple, respectively.
The Vandals and the Webfoots
meet again today.

Oregon Golfers
Invade Corvallis
For Dual Mix
Captain Doc Near
Plays No. 1; Ducks
Are Favored
By MILT LEVY
Oregon’s title-bound golf team
plays in Corvallis today to test
out Oregon State’s strength on its
own course in a match which may
show what competition will be
like when the northern division
championship match is played
there the latter part of this
month.
The Duck golf team defeated
Oregon State here in the first
part of the season without muck
trouble but will probably findd
plenty of competition today a*
the Ducks are without their scor
ing champ, Bennie Hughes, who
will be unable to make the trip.
This is the last dual match of
the season for the Ducks and they
meet the Staters today with only
one defeat during the season.
Near at Helm
Captain-coach Doc Near will
take the helm again for this
match in the No. 1 position. Rich
Werschkul will take the second
position, the place usually occu
pied in matches by Benny
Hughes, and Chuck Phipps will
be the No. 3 man. Don Cawley,
Bob Engelke, and Chet Keller
will man the last three berths.
Keller has been in the seventh
position most of the season and
this will be his first chance at
singles play.
Oregon State is the team to
beat this year because the Beav
ers are having the championship
match in Corvallis this year and
the team that is playing on its
home course has a distinct ad
vantage when it comes to tough
matches. Oregon won the title
here last year and is out to get:
it again this year.
