Ducks Face Idaho Nine in Moscow Oregon Begins Tough Road Trip Webfoots Boast Two Wins Over Vandal Baseball Team; Hobson Has Four Winning Pitchers The next seven days is going to be the toughest yet for Oregon’s newly risen ball club and especially for its weak pitching staff. For, starting today, the Ducks meet Idaho, Washington State, and Wash ington in fast succession in different cities. Coach Hobby Hobson, following his code, will play each game as it comes rather than thinking of the others. He did this in basketball and will do the same in the diamond sport. The first test of the now Golfers Await Beaver Match On Saturday Northern Division Meet May 25, Ends Duck Season The golfing Ducks are putting the finishing touches on their game in preparation for their match with Oregon State at Cor vallis Saturday. The Oregon golf team lost only one match this season. They de feated Idaho in Moscow, Oregon State here, and the University of British Columbia. In the match with Washington State, the Ducks were in the lead until the match was called because of rain. The defeat came against the Univer sity of Washington in Seattle. Title Play May 25 This match will be the last con ference appearance of the Ducks until they play in the Northwest championship playoffs in Corval lis May 25. A four-man team from each school is entered. In the match Saturday at Cor vallis, Oregon will be minus their medalist champ, Benny Hughes. He will be missed as he has tak en medalist honors in most of the matches this year and has also gotten his share of the points. Doc Near will be in the top position with Rich Werschkul playing No. 2 man and Chuck Phipps in the third position. Don Cawley, Bob Engelke and Chet Keller will hold down the last three positions. -“Springtime in Vienna” A friendly warning—no white shoes, ties, or pigging at lunch— Remember ? Eugene Branch of the United States National Bank of Portland Member F.D.I.C. secona-piace uregons win oe against Forrest Twogood’s Vandal nine this afternoon in Moscow, Idaho. They play tomorrow, too. On a road trip into the Willam ette valley last week, Idaho lost two slug fests to Oregon, 10 to 6, and 16 to 8. But, Idaho has some pretty fair hitting in its batting lineup and back on its home field shoul<? be tough to knock over again. Two Vandal Wins Two of Idaho’s pitchers, Dick Snyder and veteran Merle Stod dard, have been credited with northern division wins. Snyder is the fast ball pitcher whose arm apparently has no joints — it seems loose to the point of rub beriness. It was he who led his mates to a win over Oregon State. Stocky Stoddard has been credited with one over Washing ton State. But, Oregon has four pitchers in its camp who have been cred ited with victories, Virg Haynes has won two. What’s more, Hobby has six of his boys who have bat ting averages ranging from .600 down to .300. Arba Ager, reserve infielder, tops them all. The oth er five are regular players. Monday and Tuesday, Wash ington State is the opponent with a one day’s full rest between the Vandals and the Cougars. But Tuesday, Hobson takes his fifteen players and his student manager to Seattle and a Washington game Wednesday. Split Likely Sideline experts give Oregon three of the six road games. But, if the Webfoots should hit the ball consistently, they may come out of it with more victories. The probable starting pitcher will be Haynes for Oregbn. He has worked very little during the past week. Twogie will probably use Snyder as his choice. Umpire Spec Burke claims that Snyder was really pitching against Ore gon State the other day. His curve was breaking just right. Should Snyder toss against Ore gon and should he be on, then the Ducks will be in for a tough day at bat. Those making the trip are: Hobson, Pete Mitchell, student manager, Haynes, A1 Linn, Jack Jasper, Pete Igoe, Bob Reider, pitchers, Herb Hamer, Jack Shimshak, Bill Calvert, Johnny Berry, Ager, Tommy Cox, in fielders, Bill Carney, Dick Whit man, and Bill White, outfielders. -“Springtime in Vienna” .—..... Phi Sigs Win The accuracy of Frank Hitch cock in hitting the corners was too much for the Gamma hall boys as the Phi Sigs took the match in two straight games, 15 to 2, 15 to 5. Sherry Ross put up a good fight with four men, but were unable to stop the Pi Kaps, as they dropped the match 15 to 13, 15 to 7. The Chi Psis received a char ity win as the Super-Chargers de faulted. Clark sprung back into the top position Wednesday when he wal loped Les Werschkul 6-1, 6-2, and had more than enough steam to stay there, as Key’s net play was surpassed by Clark’s hard drives and overhand smashes. Len’s serves were even stronger than usual as he played unbeatable tennis for the second straight day. Bob Potwin is once more No. 5 man, defeating Dick Williams in a return match yesterday. Wersch kul will play No. 2, Key No. 3, and Bob Horning will hold down the fourth position. Clark and Key will form the first doubles tandem and Werschkul and Pot win will play second doubles. With Oregon State also weak in the sprints as a result of le£ injuries to Rogers and Cross, it now appears that the team with the most capable reserve sprint ers will also win the meet. Mile Feature Run A battle royal looms in tbs popular mile feature that will sss Oregon’s Bob Mitchell and Rea Kleinfeldt both out to beat Don Vaillancourt, ace distance man of the Orange. All three runners will put on a second show for the faun when they meet in the two-mile. With the majority of first places pretty well conceded to be in Oregon’s favor, it is evident that second and third place points will be an important factor in de ciding the meet. In the reserve strength department, the Beav ers seem to have a decided edge, as indicated by the recent Ore gon-Oregon State relays in which the Beaver quartets completely outclassed the Ducks to win an easy 5 to 2 victory. Hayward has declared today a day of rest for the Ducks and will hold a short meeting this afternoon with his charges, to dis cuss Saturday’s problems and strategy. “Springtime in Vienna”-■ 9 PARAMOUNT REVOLVING BAR BELLS AT FACTORY PRICES BUY DIRECT FROM MANUFACTURER WRITE FOR NEW PRICE LIST AND CATALOGUE CARL KOEBERLE PARAMOUNT BAN BELLS MFGR. 1812 GARFIELD PL.
