•5 Hen Scratches By MARGE DIBBLE, Sports Editor Women’s Edition I » Prospects of a Webfoot victory • fit Pullman today are very gloomy. but the University cin clermen are out to "do or die" for the school. Fourteen of Coach Bill Hayward’s boys nervously and anxiously boarded the north bound train yesterday to be on i hand for their second conference meet. In spite of the unfavorable predictions, however, Oregon has a few irons in the fire, and will undoubtedly walk off with some of the events. Hod Hansen, who , lias been laid up by injuries but who is now back in form, has been • -clearing the 13-foot bar in pole vaulting very easily at practices, and should be able to beat any of ihe Cougar men. Captain Kirman Storli is always dependable, and , stands a good chance of chalking up a victory for Oregon. Boyd , Brown, in the javelin throw, and Khle Reber in the broadjump, are both heavy pre-meet favorites. Selections soon All eyes will be fixed upon tha results of today’s meet and upon the progress of the various track men until selections are made , for the Northwest conference to be held in Seattle, May 17, and the Coast meet of May 24 at Los Angeles. You may sure that ev ery man on the track squad will tie fighting for the chance of go ing, and the cream of the crop will be sent to defend Oregon's green and yellow. Coed Sports What’s been happening in the long unheard-of coed intramural softball games? Well, ail contests have been going off on schedule, and the race is well past the half way mark. It looks as if it will be a bitter fight to the finish, ■with the Co-op, Chides, ADPi, and Kappa teams taking the spot light. Second-baseman Maurine Her , niann. ADPi, is perhaps the most , outstanding player in this sea . son’s contest. She has done a great job on the team, and with r her covering this hot position, the ADPis stand a good chance i of walking off with the title. Speaking of good players, Al r pha Gam’s Elaine Gray com .. -mands attention. Playing infield, , f:he has been outstanding in cov . ering the pitcher’s box on all the . fast plays. Rusty Tomlinson. Co-op's sen . ior red-headed PE major, is a , good man on any team, and in any sport, and although not up to par, she has played a good ; game, and has done much to put , fire into the team. J Umpires Noted “Throw out the umpire ! ’’ “Whad’ ya mean—a ball ? Are you blind!” This is about the only recognition the umpire in a base ball game receives from the crowds. One would think they would become horribly discour aged, and refuse to volunteer their services. But each year old and new girls turn out to give the coed intramural softball man agers a hand. Mildred McCarthy, who can be seen almost every afternoon at the Gerlinger field umpiring a game, said that it was a difficult thing to have to make decisions when one naturally knows a num ber of the players on both s . s. “The only way to command the respect of the girls,” she advised, “is to go into the game as if you really mean business. If the um pire sticks by her decisions, the teams will soon realize that she knows what she is doing, and will abide by her rulings. Above all, the umpire must never hesitate in making a decision, for if she does, she’s sunk." This business of umpiring is really a thankless job. Few peo ple even know who the many um pires are. Among the many girls who have been acting as officials this season, special recognition should go to Mildred McCarthy, Kathleen Brady, and Margaret Young, all of whom have done more than their share to make the coed intramural softball con test fgir and square. She now looms as a possible threat for contestants in the national golf tournaments. Gal Netters Defy Rain Despite the unexpected ram that has dampened the tennis courts considerably of late, the girls’ tournaments are being suc cessfully carried off. The second round was completed last night with very few defaults. This year, a new idea is being carried out in the all-campus sin gles, as each girl gets two chanc es for a loss before being elim inated. The girls who are unde feated so far in these matches are Marilyn Christlieb, Robin Nel son, Phyllis Sanders, and Norma Scarpelli. In the interhouse sin gles, Pat Larkin, Helen Moore, Nancy Lewis, Margaret Holford, Virginia Yost, Florence Schyler, Maxine Klinge, and Ellen Ann Evans are yet to be beaten. It is interesting to note that many of these players are from California, and perhaps one of them will become champion and upset the last two years’ record of an Oregonian winner. The next matches must be played off by Tuesday night at 7, and the arrangements must be made by the girl who is on top of Rookie Reiser Helps Dodgers With Hits Oil*' of the bis factors in the sudden rise of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the major leagues’ unprediotables, is IltroUl (I’ete) Keiser, infielder. Keiser is only a rookie, but has been sensational thus far. This ac tion picture was taken during a tune-up game in Tampa, Florida, with the Cincinnati Reds. Jimmy W ilson is the catcher. NOTICE! All intramural softball games were called off today. Play will be resumed next week. the bracket. All girls who are not sure who or when they play should consult the schedule by the cage in Gerlinger immediately. Werschkul Grabs Lead Les Werschkul will hold down the No. 1 spot on Oregon’s net team for the first time this year against the Orangemen in Cor vallis this morning. Werschkul, in this sudden rise, duplicates his performance of last year in which he started out slow, and rose to the coveted No. 1 position. In taking over the top notch, Werschkul becomes the third net ter to play his position. Larry Key played number one against Linfield, Willamette, and Leader Tennis Shop. Leonard Clark took the top rating in the following two matches with Washington State and Idaho. MR. and MRS. NEWT Oregon BilJsUW Monday Oregon’s battling baseball nine meets the Washington huskies Monday at Howe field. The two game series, which was scheduled for Friday and Saturday, was moved up to Monday and Tues day as a result of occasional showers and the consequently muddy field. The Huskies are so far unbeat en in northern division play, hav ing chalked up a double-header victory over Idaho and a single win over Washington State. The Webfoots have a good chance of climbing to at least second position if they win both games from the invading team. At present, the University team is in the third position. Dick Izzard, Coach Tubby Graves’ ace hurler, will probably be in the starting position for Washington, but as yet Coach Hobby Hobson has given out no definite information as to the Oregon battery. Possible starters are either Virg Haynes or A1 Linn. Kappa Sigs Take Title Competition in “B” volleyball was slack yesterday as three teams took games by default. The Kappa Sigs received their fourth win and the league 4 title as the result of a default by the Yeomen. Phi Psis Win Phi Psis took a match from the Campbell Co-op in a very slow game in which the play featured exactly nothing. It was a straight game victory, 15 to 6, 15 to 7. The Pi Kaps won dn default from the Omega hall, as did the Zeta hall boys from the Phi Sigs. Close Games Slated Play in the “A” league really began in earnest Tuesday of next week as the Phi Delts take on the DUs, and the ATOs battle the Theta Chis. Each of the teams has won four games in competi tion to date without being defeat ed. It seems likely that the two winners will possibly meet in the “A” volleyball finals. All Monday’s games have been set for Tuesday. Tuesday’s games (all “A”): 4:00: Kappa Sigma vs. Kirk wood Co-op, ATO vs. Theta Chi. 4:40: Phi Delts vs. DUs, Sig ma Chi vs. Omega hall.
