Webfoots Bow to Orange Again, 10-7
Beavers Batter
Oregon’s Jasper
Schwab, Leovich, Shimshak Hit Home
Runs; Clayton Shaw Holds Ducks Down;
Staters Feature Two Double Plays
Oregon State increased its lead to two games in the northern
division baseball play Saturday by walloping Oregon for the second
time in as many days, 10 to 7, at Corvallis. Friday on Howe field the
Beavers opened the season with a 10 to 3 win over the Webfoots.
Right-hander Clayton Shaw, recently returned from Honolulu with
the Oregon State basketball team, scattered nine hits during the full
nine innings to hold the Ducks
i;t check. Meanwhile the Beavers
bunched eight hits in three big
innings off Left-Hander Jack
Jasper.
Reider Relieves
Bob Reider replaced Jasper,
pitching two and one-third inn
ings. Most of the story of Ore
gon State’s run superiority may
be told in five extra-base hits
poled out by the Beavers. Arland
Schwab and Johnny Leovich, the
catcher who was continually in
Oregon pitchers’ hair Friday,
slammed out a home run apiece.
Nearly every inning Shaw put
himself in a hole and gladly used
the support of two double plays
and timely outs to get himself
out of hot water.
Shimshak Homes
Jack Shimshak, second base
man, who had much trouble at
the plate laced a home run over
the center fielder’s head which
sent the Oregons into a short
run-spree. The Webfoots fol
lowed with a three-run rally in
the seventh frame to send the in
vaders ahead of the Beavers, 7
to 6.
In the next inning Oregon State
began to win the runs back with
singles and Leovich’s home run.
It was then that Reider replaced
Jasper and retired the Staters in
one-two-three order.
Leovich and Schwab took bat
ting honors for Oregon State with
three and two hits in four at
tempts, respectively. Shimshak
and Bill Carney were the big
guns of the Oregon offensive with
three for five and two for four,
respectively.
Frosh Beat Varsity
Last night the varsity played
a practice game with the frosh.
Bob Rehberg went the seven
inning route for the frosh and
aided in the yearling 2 to 1 win
over the big brothers. Virg
Hayne and Pete Igoe worked on
the mound for the varsity. Don
Kirsch, frosh second baseman hit
a home run.

Aftermath of Oregon’s 10 to 7
beating at Corn Valley Saturday:
Opening day pitchers didn’t
have a good time at all. At Eu
gene, Spec Burke slammed Mayor
Large’s opening pitch for a hefty
single, and at Corvallis, Mayor
Hand walloped Secretary of State
Earl Snell out of the box the same
way. . . . The crowd really wasn’t
any larger than Oregon’s — the
stands overflowed by they weren’t
very big stands. . . Easiest place
in the league to get a homer is
over that four-foot picket fence
. . . and Bell field is the hardest
place to bunt, too. It’s got a
terrific slope each way from the
pitcher’s box.
Nomination for the best loved
man to visit OSC. . . . Hobby Hob
son . . . and when Hobby went out
to argue with Spec about a decis
ion at the plate, how they loved
it. Beavers walked off with all
the prizes, which is only fair,
since Ducks did here. They gave
the prize for the most spectacular
play to Leovich for his homer
. . . but it really was a back
handed running catch by Dick
Whitman, which was highway
robbery.
OSC fans behind the Oregon
bench pelted the lads with pea
nuts . . . isn't monkeys the craz
iest people? And “Choo-choo”
Tsoutsouvas gave a prize to the
best dressed Beaverette—making
sure he gave it in person — she
was wearing a dress like every
body else. Bob Rieder looks like
Hobby’s best pitcher.
More highway robbery was a
terrific swat by Cece Walden
which headed over the left field
fence, then was blown back in to
be caught by Bonney . . . and
the reason Bill Carney got two
hits was on account of he was
mad about a one-day pin affair...
The parade was beautiful, only
OSC’s pep band is worse than
ours, which is pretty bad . . . the
parade was all cars and two
teams in them. . . . The loud
speaker system plays records be
fore the game—why doesn’t ours ?

Frosh in Relay
Races Saturday
Jesse Truax Leads
OSC in 440,880;
Lockhart Star
The rooks from Beaverland
stretched their legs Saturday and
left Oregon’s frosh trackmen in
the dust, winning all five events *
in the annual relay meet.
Jesse Truax and Kennon Lock
hart used their birdlegs to anchor
successfully twice. Truax broke
the tape in the 440 and 880 re
lays while Lockhart strode home
in the three-mile and came back
to finish first on the medley.
For the frosh, Bob Rudolph
came nearest to being a double
winner—he pulled his team even
in the 440 and ran the first quar
ter-mile of his life to make up a
dozen yards in the mile relay. No
record times were made.
Summary:
Medley—Won by Rooks (Ham

Duck Golf Teams
Swamp Oregon State
The Oregon varsity and frosh

the frosh from the rooks, 20 y2 to
6^2.
In the varsity’s match the Ore

Benny Hughes, Oregon's north
ern division golf star, was the
day’s medalist with a sub par 71.
This was Oregon's second con

Washington at Seattle. This
match was also Oregon’s only
conference match in Eugene.
The frosh took 13 of the 18
points in the afternoon singles
and won the doubles iy2 to 1 y2.
Dick Hanen and Ray Weston
