Up from the ranks came Len Ballif and Bud Vandeneynde to oppose each other for number one spot, the presidency. Nominations included Peggy Rakestraw and Marge Dibble for vice-president; Ruth Hartley and Mary McAdams for secretary; and Mac Deitrich and Reid Far rell for treasurer. Succeeding the present frosh executive group of President Les Anderson, Vice-Prexy Jeannette Neilson, Secretary Ruth Graham, and Treasurer Glenn Williams, the winning candidates will take office to manage the class for next year. (Additional details on page 6) Spring Outfits Mag Be Worn At SDX Hop Queen Betty, Court To Appear for First Time Coeds will get the chance to wear their new spring outfits, and men their white coats at the “Harlem Hop” Saturday evening, dance heads decreed today. Short silks for the women, and suits or sport coats, white coats, and slacks will be in order for men, the Sigma Delta Chi Emily Posts said. Tickets for the Gene Coy played dance will go on sale to day at the ticket booth between Oregon and Commerce, and liv ing organization salesmen will continue the house sales. Junior Weekend Queen Betty Buchanan and her court will be officially presented at the dance for the first time, with Alan Torbet introducing the royalty. Dancers will be given the chance to see themselves in the movies when a 13-minute Koda chrome moving picture is pre sented at intermission. Shots of campus personalities and events of last spring and this fall make up the film. Benny Goodman to Appear at University 'King of Swing' Will Play for Frosh Glee May 25; Committee Aims to Surpass Last Year's Dance; Plans to Start Soon Benny Goodman, “America's King of Swing,” will bring his band to the campus May 25 to play for the Frosh Glee, dance committee men formally announced last night at freshman class nominations, Villard hall. Hopes for a top “name” band were realized when the man whose famous clarinet and swing arrangements have made him nationally prominent wire acceptance of the bid. It will be his first appear ance in the Northwest, Jeff Kit chen, who with Lyle Selleck, heads the dance, reported. “Last year’s Frosh Glee set a high in dance successes,” Kitchen said. “Our aim this year is to equal if not surpass the Glee of last spring, and with the signing of Goodman we feel we are off to a good start.” Tentatively set for May 4, the date for the Glee has been stepped up to May 25 so that the band could appear. Some i*earrange ment in the spring term social calendar was necessary which has been ironed out by the com mittee. The complete Glee committee, appointed for some time, has nearly three more weeks to work on the dance due to te date ad vance but will start action in the near future, Kitchen and Selleck indicated. De adline on Class Card Sale Nears Class cards for University stu dents may lie obtained for 50 cents in the educational activities office of the Igloo or at the busi ness manager’s office in Johnson hall. No cards can be purchased on the day of that class’ election, and each student must appear in person to buy his card. Married Couples Eat The young- married couples’ covered dish dinner will be held tonight at 6:30 o’clock at West minster house. Any couple, preferably one of them attending the University, is welcofe to attend the dinner, and bring a covered dish. Helene Parson Sets Broadway for Goal Some day Helene Parsons wants to see her name in Broad way neon and with her name heading the cast in "Idiot's De light’’ at the present time, her goal seems to be closer than ever. A veteran of "Stage Door,” “Two Gentlemen from Verona,” and “Peer Gynt,” this is never theless, Miss Parsons debut in the leading part. A brownette by birth. Miss Parsons has sacrificed her tresses to become the exotic blond Irene in Robert E. Sher wood's play. “This is a part which most actresses would like to play,” the campus theater’s star said, "for not only is it a chance to act but it gives a chance to be a 'clothes horse’ too.” The wardrobe department has made three complete new cos tumes, designed by Horace Rob inson, for Miss Parsons’ appear ance. Her pet costume, she de scribed is the lounging pajamas worn in the last act. The pa jamas are pink and blue but to fit the personality of Irene (pro nounced I-ran-y), the colors are split with the pink on one side and blue on the other. Slippers of the opposite colors add to the patchwork outfit. Her most embarrassing stage experience happened last Sunday night. Rehearsing with her lead ing man, Gerry Smith, into the wee hours they had reached the passionate love scene. As Gerry started the “clinch," in walked Jack Cossman, the night watch man, wanting to know if it “was just acting." First Nighters Will 'GoFormal’ Pulitzer Prize Play to Take Spotlight at 8 Opening Night Reserve Seats Going Fasl European War Foreseen by R. Sherwood By BETTY JANE BIGGS Thirteenth street will have the glamour and exotic atmosphere of a Hollywood premier tonight as patrons and patronesses in tuxedos* and evening dresses mount the stairs of Johnson hall to attend the first night of the University theater's "Idiot's Delight.’’ Curtain on the first act will go up at 8 o'clock. Director Horaco Robinson, assistant professor of drama, announced. Box office repot If* show only a few reserve seats are left for the formal opening. But a good choice of seats remain for the following productions on Sat urday and Tuesday evenings. Helene Parsons and Gerry Smith take the leads in this play which received the Pulitzer prize in 1936. Foreseeing a European war four years ago, Robert E. Sher wood, author of “Idiot's De light,” made his forecast and used his predictions to form the plot of the play. The story points out the munition manufacturers’ work in building an international conflict. NYA Students Place Many on Honor Roll Three hundred' and sixty-one NYA students totaled more than one-third of the total number of students on the honor roll for winter term, Karl W. Onthank, dean of personnel, stated yester day in announcing' comparative figures for men and women on the University campus. Actual per cent was 33.5 and included 55 men students. Total number on the winter honor roll was 164, and this represents 5.1 per cent of the entire school en rollment Firty-three per cent of all "A" students were on NYA compared to 0.59 per cent from the whole University, Dean Onthank said. Refugee Helene Parsons, who will play 'he part of a Russian refugee in “Idiot's Delight,” will be in a> starring role in the University, theater production tonight. Board to Name Oregana Head Marilyn Ashley. Wilbur Bishop Will Try for Position The selection of next year’rj Oregana editor will be the main business on the slate for the edu cational activities board meeting today. While today’s meeting will ring down the flag on the race for tin* Oregana editorship, there will still remain the positions of Ore gana business manager, Emerald editor, and Emerald business manager, which will be filled in the near future. At three o’clock, the activities board will convene to select an editor for the 1941 Oregana. They will interview Marilyn Ashley and Wilbur Bishop, present Oregana workers who filed application;* earlier in the week. Leader to Interview Mrs. Janet Baumhover, Camp Fire Girl counsellor, will be on the campus April 18 to interview girls interested in camp counsell ing. Application blanks are avail able in the dean's office.
