Colored Orchestra
Has Played Over
National Hookups
Thirteen won’t be bad luck, at
least, not for campus dancers,
when Gene Coy's 13 Black Aces
present their sweet swing April 13,
at the Sigma Delta Chi spring term
dance in McArthur court.
Coy was selected by the organ
ization to play for the affair last
night, culminating a long and
thorough search for a satisfactory
orchestra.
Coy will bring several novelty
features, which have gone over big,
especially with college audiences,
Max Frye, promotion chairman for
the dance, said. Among these will
be characterizations of “Old Man
Mose Is Dead" and “Smokey Joe.”
“He’s expected to be the succes
sor of Duke Ellington, Jimmie
Lunceford, and Count Basie as the
top colored band in the country,”
Frye said.
Coy’s Black Aces have played
over several national hookups, in
cluding NBC, CBS, and Mutual.
“Coy has ‘wowed’ audiences all
over the country,” Frye said.
Coy plays the drums.
