Written by Felix Mendelssohn in 1845, the first performance of "Elijah" took place in the town hall at Birmingham, England, on the morning of Wednesday, August 26, 1846. Due to the fact that eight of the numbers were encored, the performance lasted from dawn un til almost noon, when the composer appeared at the conductor’s stand. An observer of this scene wrote of it: "The reception he met with from the assembled thousands was absolutely overwhelming, and the sun, emerging at that moment, seemed to illumine the vast edifice in honor of the bright and pure be ing who stood there, the idol of all beholders.” The chorus at the work's pre miere numbered less than those who will sing the work in McArthur court. The Festival choral group, including a contingent of 62 from London, totalled 271, of which 79 were sopranos, 60 were male altos (or "bearded altos,” as Mendelssohn called them), 72 basses, and 60 tenors.
