Macbeth
i
Shakespearean
Tragedy to Show
May 15
Not to be outdone by Orson
Welles and his striking innova
tions of play production, the Uni
versity theater of the University
of Oregon will shock the conserv
atives. and the classicists during
spring term by presenting Shake
speare’s great tragedy, “Macbeth”
—in modern dress, styled as of
“■ spring, 1940.
As far as is known, this will be
the first “modern-dress Shake
speare” offered in Eugene. Both
the cast and the director look for
ward with enthusiasm to this de
parture from custom, which is
frankly experimental, as they have
no record of “Macbeth” having
been so treated by any producers,
professional or otherwise.
For those who prefer their
Shakespeare in the conventional
manner, one group of players will
present the play in costumes of the
historical period from which the
story is drawn, 11th century Eng
land and Scotland. As the produc
tion will be given six or more show
ings, there will be double casting
of the roles of Macbeth, Lady Mac
beth, Macduff, and possibly of sev
eral other principals.
Opening about May 15, the play
will be presented by the Guild Hall
Players, supported by a large cast
drawn from the campus and the
community at large.
Also to be presented during the
term, opening April 12, will be a

A truly colorful and great bas

Oregon sports will miss it.
