For Women Only By MAIIGE FINNEGAN Spring is in the air. Well, if there is anyone who doubts this statement, they certainly can't doubt one that spring is certainly in the Emerald today. It's enough to give anyone the fever. Spring openings always cause a lot of fuss it seems. But why not. It’s like the dawn of a new day or taking off one’s heavy coat, to see the sun peek out from behind a large black rain cloud— whoops! here I go getting dramat ic about the whole thing. Borrowed Poetry Reminds me of a poem used on the “Neighborhood News of Ore gon” broadcast yesterday, taken from the Arlington Bulletin: How do I know spring is here And balmy breezes soon will blow? How do I know there will be no ice, No more of sleet or snow: There is always a way of knowing, There is always a certain sign. When you fail to see long under wear A-hanging on the old clothesline. It is a grand feeling though, to know that soon we’ll be able to venture out without our fur ear muffs, and maybe talk Dad into buying us a new pastel dress or two—or three, or so. Spring at the “U” And along with the coming of the spring weather and clothes, comes spring term at the “U.” Picnics, dances, golf, tennis, canoe ing, swimming, politics, and all the rest. These “extracurricular” activities will do much to cheer our winter-dampened spirits. Suspense! Everyone is now anxiously await ing the results of the JWT con ‘Volun eer’ Mannikin Reports By PAT ERICKSON They asked me Thursday night if I'd be free next Tuesday after noon. My metabolism was still working then, and my mind free, possibly due to lack of sleep. “Sure,” 1 say, “I’m free. So what?” “We’ll have you model in Gam ma Alpha Chi's fashion show.” Period. Tuesday’s a long way off. you think, until Saturday morning dawned. It was then I knew the thing couldn't go any further and told them so, right out. “Bosh.” Period. Monday tolled around. But I didn’t have anything to wear. Not a rag Now did! I ? “Silly, we’ll fix you up.” Period. Monday night I’m fixed up, not to mention pressing the garb In the wee small hours. By this time, the metabolism had definitely gone to pot. “Stop shaking, ninny." Period. There I was, alone in a sea of faces. They weren’t faces, really, just a cluster of gourds with blacked out eyes and mouths; and a bunch of yellow in one corner of the room. Commentator’s voice sweet and soothing, accompanies my retreat ing footsteps. First thing I know I'm down stairs again, after approximately a good long two minutes. “Thanks, kid.” Period. I pinch myself. I’m srill whole. I go out and drink a lime coke. Whew! 1 Girls Expected To W ear Flashy Hats for Spring Military Lines Followed in Construction; Attention will be Given to Gauzy Veils Which Will Feature One of Many Types By PAX ERICKSON Flattering and feminine are hats for spring. 1940. A large pink rose hobbled precariously atop one small rose straw chapeau we saw. The hat itself was built on squarish lines, the military influence they say, and the sharp brim softened by a filmy pale green veil. Scarlett O’Hara is playing havoc in the hat world. Much of the elaborate trimming in this year s models is attributed directly to her costumes in “Gone With the Wind.” Several exact copies of her bonnets are being shown. They are for the most part small, profusely flower trimmed, and voluminously veiled. Colors are predominantly black, rose, heaven blue, and toast shades. This year’s hats, differing from severe and unflattering ones of for mer years, strive merely to be gay to look at, and complimentary to many types of wearers. One small black number we saw had three small black birds perched above the brim. It was in teresting to see off the wearer and extremely chic on. test. Hope they won't keep us in suspense too long. There's some thing else to look forward to next term. Point of Pins In the spring a young man’s fancy—in the fall he’s plain. Sure it’s old, but so are most of the jokes going around the campus lately. But to get back, it seems the lads are not waiting for the formal spring opening this year before turning their thoughts to romance. The way pins have been stuck around lately, Bryant and Rogers are kept busy “pricking” up their ears for news. Mostly small, 1940 hats are worn at angles. Back treatment has un dergone some changes, with the back of the hat being more filled in, as opposed to the extremely open styles of last year. This filling in is accomplished by means of rib bon trims and veils. Great attention is being paid to veils as well. This year’s veil length is to be eye shadow, that is, the veil over the face reaches just be low the eyes. The greater part of the veil is arranged over the back of the hat. Veils are of soft, fine material, and the more expensive ones are imported. v While the militaristic influence has been shown to some extent in 1940 hats, they still remain softly feminine, and infinitely flattering. Any kind of flirtatious detail is employed. Many hats start with a basic military shape and end con tradictorily decorated with perky bows, numerous flowers, or gauzy bright veils. The most important material, as well, is straw, delicate and closely woven. 1940 hats, in the numerous col lections, offer an intriguing Easter bonnet for every type of wearer. Who would not feel gayly hatted beneath a bright spring flower garden, or an eccentric small bird ?
