MY VALENTINE
By PAT ERICKSON
It took a lot of nerve, but Bill
did it.
He went down to the campus and
bought the frilliest Valentine he
could find.
He decided the clerk was giving
him queer looks and hastened to
assure the man he couldn’t use a
heart-shaped box of chocolates,
and that he'd really come in to buy
a valentine, not to send his laundry
home.
Alter all, Peg had asked him to
the Heart Hop. Why shouldn’t he
buy her a Valentine ? “For my
mom,” he muttered affably as the
clerk tucked the paper doily affair
in a sack.
Hurrying homeward in the dusk,
Bill began to worry. Should he have
been so presumptious ? Maybe he
should send Peg a hydrangea or
whatever those flowers are. She
might have liked a picture, and
then again he wasn't very hand
some, except for his curly eye
lashes.
Rain was getting sloshy. Bill
stumbled on a crack in the pave
ment. But he clutched the Valen
tine tightly. He didn’t have any
time to lose.
Home, he searched the closet
for his green sweater. He searched
his drawers. He finally found it
on a chair, and shining from the
bosom of the thing—his frat pin.
Bill pounced on the sweater, fair
ly ripped the pin off, and tucked

jl tovuigiy into me wmie nice
folds of his Valentine.
The freshman at the sorority
door was a little surprised when
Bill shoved a little package at her,
told her to give it to Peg, then
bounded out the door. His heart
was beating so he could scarcely
speak.
Pe^ was baffled, too, when she
opened the package.
There was Bill’s fraternity pin,
in the midst of doves, violets, and
paper lace. "Be My Valentine” it
said.
She chuckled to herself. Tt had
taken Bill such a long time to know
she was his Valentine!
