Junior Festivities
Open With Crowning
Of Queen Virginia I
Inaugurated by the crowning of Queen Virginia Kegan and the
installation of newly-elected ASUO officers, the 1938 edition of Junior
weekend got under way yesterday noon as a capacity crowd broke
all records for campus luncheon attendance.
Queen Virginia was crowned at l'Z :47 by Junior Class President
Zane Kemler, and the new ASUO officers were administered the oath
of office by Dr. Donald M. Erb, president of the University.
Black-robed Friars and Mortar Board members recruited their an
nual crop of pledges, wending their I
way through the crowd to pick the
outstanding junior women and
men. Another procession, the
Asklepiad pledges, also wound in
and out among the crowd as the
white-smocked, masked figures
carrie a draped skeleton oil a
stretcher.
Friars Pledge Seven
Friars pledged were President
Donald M. Erb, honorary member,
and Zane Kemler, Harry Weston,
Bill Cummings, Lloyd Tupling,
Paul Deutschmann, and Henry Nil
sen.
Mortar Board tapped Betty
Riesch, Ruth Tawney, Marionbeth
Wolfenden, Catherine Philp, Elisa
beth Stetson, Mary Elizabeth Nor
vell, Ruth Ketchum, and Honorary
Member Mrs. John Stark Evans.
The list of Asklepiad pledges in
cludes Herbert Iwata, Orval Ander
son, James Moe, Clarnce Peterson,
Howard Jones, Joe Amato, Theo
dore Smith, Owen Miller, Don Mc
Donald, Powell Loggan, Scott Mc
Keown, and Donovan O. Cooke.
Sigma Delta Chi pleges stole a
march on the coronation as they
crowned their own “queen” on the
royal platform.
Violators Dunked
Intermingled with these other
activities Order of the “O” men
had their day as they dunked var
ious indiscreet males who violated
campus luncheon traditions. The
“O” men patrolled the green in
squads, pouncing on males talking
to girls, or wearing neckties or
■white shoes. Even women were
dipped in the sunken fountain be
side the new law school building as
they defied the anti-talking tradi
tion.
President Donald M. Erb bowed
to luncheon tradition with all oth
er males, appearing without his
necktie to keep his head dry.
Perfect weather enhanced the
spectacle as the cloudless sky
showed in direct contrast to last
year’s windblown affair.
