Howard Hobson’s Webfoots take the field this afternoon against Tufa
J*y Grave’s University of Washington baseballers in the first of the
two-game series.
Coach Grave's men have met with little success this season. They
lost both their games to Washington State, and broke even with Idaho.

WSC Team

Although beaten by Idaho’s sur
prising Vandals in a dual meet at
Pullman last Saturday, the WSC
track and field squad which in
vades Eugene Saturday for a meet
with Oregon’s Webfoots still rate
on paper as the track power of
the northwest.
Coach Karl Schlademan will pre
sent for Webfoot track fans’ ap
proval a host of stars, some of
whom rank with the best in the
nation. Especially are the Cougars
powerful in the sprints where such
stalwarts as Lee Orr, Mel Petti
chord. and Curt Ledford hold out.
Orr ran fifth in the Berlin Olym
pics of 1936, and last year finished
third in the NCAA meet in his
specialty, the 220-yard dash. Led
ford won both sprints against
Idaho last week, while Pettichord
was competing at the Drake relays
along with Orr.

coach is “definitely considering” a
job as physical education director
in the Portland school system, and
may have coached his last hoop
champion here. Jot that down in
your notebook.
He’s going to Portland this
weekend to confer with the Port
land school board about it, and
promises definite announcement
one way or the-other early next
week.
The position has two lures
which Hobby isn't overlooking.
1. Money—the base salary is
$4,380—over a thousand more
than he got here in 1937-38, and
$530 more than he’ll get next year.
2. Future—in Portland he’d have
a nice position in a field in which
he got his master’s degree, physi
cal education, with far less worry
than he has coaching college ball.
Considering it further, the Rose
City job would be more or less
trial for two years, and' after that
he’d practically be in the system
for life. That’s the way they do
it in Portland.
Coaching college ball you’ve
practically got to produce steady
winners or get bounced.
The college coach has to cash
in, in other words, when he’s a
winner. Hobby as a winner now
is getting about $3,800, while

are getting known salaries of I
$4,000 to $7,000. And the Webfoot !

ably take care of itself—and Hob
by might eventually get a salary

Phi Delts Pace Intramural
Meet; Holman Sets Record
One national Sigma Delta Psi
record went by the boards yester
day as Phi Delta Theta won the
intramural track meet held at Hay
ward field. The record was Art
Holman’s 13.5 in the 120 low
hurdles which lops .8 of a second
off the present record, alothugh
Holman’s mark will not become
official unless it is unbeaten in na
tional competition.
The Phi Delts scored 246.5 points
to win the meet, beating out the
Kappa Sigs who scored 232 points
to take runner-up honors.

One hundred sixty men entered
the competition, which culminated
in a 35-man field in the mile run.
The event was won by Ken Ship
ley, Phi Delt, who ran it in 5:02.
