Bob Hardy Shuts Out Idaho Vandals, 8 to 0 Hfl Oregon Ends Losing Streak Behind Slim Southpaw’s Hurling Coach Howard Hobson's Champs Turn in Smooth Play Afield and Slug Out 13 Hits In Spree; Get Five Runs in Fourth - By ELBERT HAWKINS Portsider Bob Hardy pitched Oregon’s baseball team right out of its frightful slump yesterday by limiting Forrest Two good’s Idaho club to only six singles, shutting* them out, 8 to 0. Hardy, junior member of Hobby Hobson’s pitching staff, permitted only seven Vandals to reach first base—only one getting to third—and departed from conventional tactics of left-handers by walking nary a man. Howe field was still in soggy condition, causing outfielders no end or trouble, but Oregon s un certain infield snapped out of its lethargic streak by giving Hardy almost perfect support. The win didn’t put Oregon with in hailing distance of first place in the northern division race, but it left the Ducks with a grim chance to finish in the money. Don’t Hit Southpaws The Vandals evidently don’t like lefthanders. Add Hardy’s nine inn ings to the five Linde heaved at the end of Monday’s game and you have 14 consecutive scoreliss inn ings for Idaho. The Webfoot pitcher was lenient for four innings, giving Idaho the aforementioned six scattered hits, but for the last five frames pitched perfect ball, facing only 15 men. . Oregon sewed up the ball game very definitely in the last of the fourth by knocking Pitcher Hall berg off the mound, continuing the attack off Edwin Ranta for five hits and five runs. The Ducks held a 1 to 0 lead up to then. Beard Opens It BoJ> Beard opened the merry rally with a single to center, and he tallied on Bob Hardy’s double to right. Matt Pavalunas singled off Hallberg, and Twogood yanked the Idaho southpaw. After Bob Smith, batting for Ken Battleson, was hit by a pitched ball, Ranta got the next two Ore gon batters, making i^ two away. But Gale Smith rapped a single into center to drive in two runs, and Wimpy Quinn tripled over cen terfielder’s head to send two more Oregon runs home. Quinn was nipped at the plate trying to stretch his hit. Oregon opened in the first inning with one run on two hits and an error when Jack Gordon and Wimpy Quinn worked a steal on Idaho. Quinn started to steal sec ond, and, while the Vandals were playing him, Gordon sneaked home. Quinn finally got back to first safely. Bob Smith singled off Ranta’s glove with one man out in the ninth and scored Oregon’s seventh run when Ford Mullen doubled to center. Mullen took third on the throw-in, and scored on Jimmie Nicholson’s sacrifice. Mullen, Nicholson, Quinn, and Beard all got two hits for Oregon, while Atkins and Spicuzza did like wise for Idaho. . Bob Hardy contributed some sort of a record for pitchers when he chalked up nine assists. WASHKE NEW ROTARY HEAD Paul R. The Wildcat team, which recently lost a close 4 to 3 decision to the OSC varsity, had fond hopes of taking the Webfoots into camp this year, but within an hour after the contests started, Washke’s men had cinched a win by taking four of the five singles matches. Although the final score indi cated that the match was a one sided affair, the Linfield lads of fered the stiffest competition that the Ducks have faced this season. Zimmerman Wins Easily Bill Zimmerman, Duck No. 4 singles man, put the Webfoots into the win column by quickly dispos ing of Bill Stryker in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. He was closely followed by Ellsworth Ellis, who won eas ily over Frank Hendricks, 6-2, 6-3. Karl Mann posted the third sin gles win of the day when he de feated John Breeding, 6-3, 6-3. Captain Larry Crane, playing in the No. 1 singles position, put the match on ice for the Webfoots when he barely edged out a 2-6 6-3, 7-5 win over Milt Robbins, Wildcat singles ace. In the third set, Robbins had Crane at match point with a 40-love advantage, but the veteran Webfoot put on a sensational rally to take the game and the next three in a row to emerge victor. Werschkul Loses Les Werschkul dropped the only singles match of the day to Harold Beall in three hard-played' sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. Beall’s hard drives, coupled with Werschkul’s many errors, gave him the edge in the match. In the doubles competition, the Duck No. 1 duo composed of Zim merfnan and Crane was hard (Please tunioto page eight) Varsity Golfers Travel North ToDefendCrown University of Idaho* Washington State Are Ports of Call Oregon varsity golfers go on the second road trip in defense of their northern division match play crown when they leave Thurs day morning for Idaho and east ern Washington.
