Oregon’s Cinder Squad
Engages Portland Pilots
Friday in Dual Track Meet
Oi egon’s sophomore-tinged but
brilliant track and field team will
make its second appearance of the
season on the Hayward cinders and
infield Friday afternoon against
Portland university, Coach Bill
Hayward announced yesterday.
In a wire to the Webfoot men
tor, George Philbrook, Portland
coach, whom Hayward had contac
ted earlier in the week, stamped
his approval on the proposed Pilot
Duck track clash, assuring Hay
ward that he would have a strong
array on hand to test again the
prowess of Mack Robinson, et al.
The Pilots took part in the Ore
gon-Oregon State, relays last Satur
day, pressing the Webfoots in sev
eral events.
Friday’s encounter will be the
first dual meet in history between
the two schools.
Chance to Show
In addition to giving the runners
competition, Friday’s meet will bej
the first opportunity for Hayward’s
field men to show their caliber.
Two field champions, Len
“Dutch” Holland and George Var
off, will open their outdoor season
with this meet. Holland has looked
impressive throwing the discus in
practice, and will be out to pick
up where he left off last year' when
he won the PCC title. Varoff, Ore
gon’s pole-vaulting pride,“Is itching
to kick himself up and over the
crossbar.
Javelin tossers and two-milers
will receive their initial competi
tion Friday. Loss of Elmer Kos
telo, letterman spear-thrower, has
left this department without an
experienced heaver, and Bill is
praying that one of his prospects
will show himself of varsity caliber
against Portland.
Lyle on Hand
Hayward is not worrying about
the two-mile, however, for in this

Palm Beach Slacks
For classroom, campus, dances, dates and
other active sports, the new Palm Beach
slacks are de rigueur. There’s nothing like
them to smarten up an odd jacket or sport
coat. They sail through a stiff tennis or
golf match without losing their handsome
drape. They wash and clean like new.
jYour favorite clothier can show you a
complete slack wardrobe that meets every
requirement of good taste and good value.
See the Fairway model, for general infor
mal wear, and the Golfer, whose reversible
bottoms keep the divots out of your cuffs.
Ask to see the new Airtones, whites, stripes
and plaids.

event he has letterman Crawford
Lyle on hand. Lyle has been slow
to reach last season’s form but is
beginning to show the stuff that
took him to the PCC last year.
Running with Lyle in this event
will be Jack Davidson, senior dis
tance man, and possibly Don
“Highlander” Barker, who may en

Dean Ellis, smooth-running hurd
ler, will be in his first varsity dual
meet. He will run his specialty, the
220-yard low hurdles, in which he
was supreme at Salem high and as
a freshman last year.
After running in about three
events—one of which may be the
low hurdles—Robinson will take a
few leaps at the broad jump pit.
He haS done 24 feet 7 inches this

Lights Go Out; Swim
Display Is Delayed
The audience went to the men’s
pool last night to see an aquatic
demonstration—but stayed for a
jam session instead.
With only a few events complet
ed, the pool was plunged into dark
ness when a main fuse failed. The
two-piece orchestra and the au
dience responded nobly by singing
“Mighty Oregon,” and followed it
with twenty minutes of all the old
and new songs they could get to
gether on.
Divers and swimmers added a
novel touch when they used spark

University high is defending state
