/•;. + SOCIETY Mu Phi Epsilon Has Formal Reception A formal reception was held Thursday at the Alpha Chi Omega house following an initiation by Mu Phi Epsilon, national music honorary for women, in honor of newly initiated patronesses and al umnae. Those initiated were: Misses Miriam Stafford, Ruth Hoo ver, Martha Patterson, Corine Combs and Beth Thomas. Mrs. Frank Roberts, Miss Grace Burnett and Miss Doris Helen Pat terson were in the receiving line. Miss Sally Addleman was in charge of a musical program con sisting of piano solos by Lois John son, and violin selections by Mar tha Patterson. A string trio com posed of Miriam Stafford, Martha Patterson and Mary Galcy also played. Those pouring were Mrs. Jane Thacher, Mrs. Ann Landsbur; Beck, Mrs. Aurora Underwood am Madame Rose McGraw. Miss Grac Burnett was general chairman fo the affair. PI Lambda Theta Holds Tea, Breakfast Members of Pi Lambda Theta, national education honorary foi women, entertained at an inform a.1 tea for about 30 women edu cation students on Thursday. The Affair was held from 3:30 to 5:3 In Alumni hall. Mrs. Veola Ros: Was in charge. The organization is also holdin a homecoming breakfast for alum nae today at 9 at the Anchorage Miss Kathryn Frye, president o: the group, will show motion pic tures from the national convention taken at Troutdale in the Pines in Denver National park. Allen Is Hostess for Honorary * Pot and Quill, literary honorary for women, held its regular meet ing at the home of Mrs. Eric W.1 Allen last Tuesday evening. Miss Florence Thompson, house chap j ron for Chi Omega sorority, was iresent at her first meeting. Miss "hompson was initiated at the last neeting of the honorary. The next neeting will be held at the home if Mrs. J. L. Hesse, November 24. Pledges and freshmen of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority will be en tertained at Mrs. Allen’s home next Monday evening at dessert and coffee. Active members of Theta Sigma Phi, women’s national journalism honorary, will be entertained by Mrs. Allen next Tuesday night at a buffet supper. A general literary meeting and discussion will be held after the supper. The discussion jvill be on women in journalism and other lines of work. Vlpha Kappa Delta To Have Invitation Dinner Alpha Kappa Delta, national so :iology honorary for women, is lolding an informal dinner next Thursday at the home of Dr. P. A. ’arsons, dean of the school of ap plied social science, following an initiation ceremony. Dr. John Mueller, professor of sociology, will ipeak on Russia. The guests and nitiates will be Misses Margaret Kerns, Clare Maertens, and Jessie Stephens. * # * Phi Mu Honors District President Phi Mu held a formal tea Mon day afternoon in honor of the or ganization's district president, Mrs. Dorothy Steel, who was in Eugene November 9, 10, and 11 from Seattle. Miss Sue Badollet, Mrs. Alice B. Macduff, Miss Mar ian Lowry, and Miss Maryellen Bradford composed the receiving line. Those pouring were Mrs. Anna Hart, Mrs. N. Patrick Barbour, ■ Mrs. P. E. Hood, and Mrs. G. W. [ Monroe. Miss Beulah Gore was in charge of the tea. On Tuesday evening the group gave an alumni dinner honoring Mrs. Steel. * * * Delta Zeta Honors Miss Elizabeth Sutton Delta Zeta entertained Miss Elizabeth Sutton, province presi dent, November 10 to 13. A series of dinners was given for Miss Sut ton during her visit on the campus. Tuesday night patronesses of Del ta Zeta were also guests at the chapter house. # * * Zeta Tau Alpha Alumnae .Have Meeting Eugene alumnae of Zeta Tau Alpha held a social meeting at the home of Mrs. W. C. Underwood, Thursday evening. Mrs. DeVerle Hempy was hostess for the group This is the first of a series of par ties to be held this winter. * * * Many Entertain For Visiting Alums Entertainment, for alumni v/ill mark the social activities on the campus this week-end. At noon today two homecoming luncheons are being held, one for students at McArthur court and a special luncheon for alumni honoring Dr. Arnold Bennett Hall at the men’s dormitory. The student reception for alum ni will be given tonight from 8 un til 10 o’clock in Alumni hall of the Gerlinger building. Fireside Party Given Beta Phi Alpha is giving a fire side party and a banquet for alum nae tonight. Chi Omega is to entertain at a formal banquet tonight at the chapter house with Miss Edith Pe terson in charge. Delta Gamma is giving a dinner tonight for alumnae. Delta Delta Delta is sponsoring a formal founders’ day banquet to night' at the chapter house for all alupnnae. Delta Zeta is having a formal banquet tonight to honor all alum nae. Miss Phyllis Smith is in charge. The Corvallis chapter of Gamma Phi Beta and alumnae from Ore gon and Oregon State will be en tertained at a formal banquet to be given at the Eugene hotel to night by the University chapter of Gamma Phi Beta. In a few instances special programs have been ar ranged for them. Methodist Frederick K. Davis will continue his interpretations of Biblical characters with Judas at the class | meeting at 9:45. Congregational The student forum will discuss two questions— ill "Jesus in the Light of Emergent Evolution" and 12) “What Some Thinkers Think About War.” A social will follow the meeting. United Lutheran The Luther league will meet at, 6:30 for a discussion of “What is the Purpose of Life,” v/ith Alice Seilon as the leader. A social at 6 p. m.t at which alumni will be especially welcome is the program for the evening. Central Lutheran The social fireside hour at 6:15 p. m. will be followed by the week ly Bible study at 7. Rev. P. J. Luvaas will lead a discussion of “Journeys With Paul.” Presbyterian The freshman group will con tinue a discussion of “Campus Friendships." Charles Martin, class president, is in charge of the meeting, which is at 9:45 a. m. The upperclass group will meet at 9:45 a. m., Jim Dinsmore being in charge of the meeting. The Westminster forum is con sidering the topic, “Why Men Drink," with Theodore Pursley as leader. Dr. Edmund S. Conklin, of the psychology department, will give a short talk on ‘‘Mental Ef-; feet of Alcohol." Helen Reynolds, will be in charge of the devotional services. The group meets at 6:15 Episcopal Miss Leila Anderson, of St. Mar garet's church in Berkeley, Cali fornia, will give a short talk be fore the student council at their meeting at 7 p. m., in the men's lounge in Gerlinger hall. Miss An derson is a student social worker. Community Liberal (Unitarian) The young people who are mem bers of the church will attend the quarterly meeting of the congrega tion Sunday evening, thus the reg ular meeting of the young people will not be held. Christian The Loyal Bereans class is to meet at 9:45, the topic being "Paul in Jerusalem.” A special devotion al is being arranged for the alumni. Mrs. R. M. Day is the teacher. The Young People’s Christian Endeavor society is holding a joint meeting with the Corvallis En deavor. The local group will leave from the First Christian church at! 3:45. i Pass to Colonial Theatre Is Awarded to Patterson In conjunction with the new weekly award, started recently, for the best copyreader on the Emer ald, the Colonial theatre pass for the last week was given to Bob Patterson. This prize, which is for both quality and quantity, was given to Parks Hitchcook the previous week. Hitchcock ran a close sec ond in last week’s contest.
