To compute the rating, the grading system is reversed so that an hour of I counts 5 points (an hour of I, II, III, or Inc. with hon ors also scores 5 points); an hour of II counts 4 points; and hour of III, 3 points; an hour of IV, 2 points; and an hour of V, 1 point. The scale used for zoning the groups is that recommended by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars. The interval is arrived at by subtracting the University rating from the highest rating pos sible with a normal load of 16 hours, and dividing the difference by ten. For this term the interval was 3.403 points. This scale is ap-. plied both above and below the University average. 17" •TALKIE. • •NEWS.. Fox McDonald — “The Squaw Man,” With Warner Baxter and Lupe Velez. Heilig—“Side Show,” with Win nie Lightner and Charles Butterworth. Colonial—"The Royal Family of Broadway,” with Ina Claire and Frederic March. State —“Charley Chan Carries On,” with Warner Oland. By IiOY SHEEDY The famous old stage play, “The Squaw Man,” has been made into movie fare by Cecil B. DeMille, but the old drama has tod many improbabilities to make especially good material. Warner Baxter plays the young Englishman who becomes an Arizona rancher be-1 cause of an unhappy love affair ini his native land. Baxter carries the difficult part very well. The story is one of inter-racial marriage, Lupe Velez playing an Indian girl who falls madly in love; with the man from Oxford. Lupe’s usual effervescence is completely | lost under her somber role, al though she tries hard. The entire cast is excellent, especially Elea nor Boardman, as the woman Bax ter leaves, Roland Young and Charles Bickford. A stranger contrast than the genteel society life of England and the cattle rancher's existence in Arizona could hardly be found. The desert scenery is very beauti ful. * * * “Side Show” at the Heilig A story of the circus, with all the comedy and tragedy that fol low the big show, is being fea tured at the Heilig for today and tomorrow. “Wild” Winnie Light ner plays in her usual fine com edy form, but her role has its se rious moments too. Charles But terworth, who has been making j such a hit in the films lately, also | plays a comedy part. Ina Claire at Colonial ‘ “The Royal Family of Broad way,” a travesty on the lives of the famous Barrymores, is con cluding its showing at the Colo nial tonight. Ina Claire and Fred ric March play the principal roles I in the film. * * * Charley Chan at State Another of Warner Oland’s great characterizations as the I crafty Chinese detective, Charley [ Chan, is being shown at the State i for today only in “Charley Chan Carries On.” AT PORTLAND COLLEGE Two former part time members of the history department staff are now on the faculty of the new junior college in Portland. They are Miss Julia Gross, former part time assistant to Dr. Andrew Fish, and Carl Landholm, former part time instructor in history. ■ OPEN HOUSE DEMANDS your Best Appearance we GUARANTEE * IT * LOOK FOR THE SHOP WITH THE RED CLOCK AND “Eugene’s Own Store” McMorran PHONE 2700 SAVE S & H GREEN STAMPS Pool your savings and get something for your house.
