a squad that should rate above the
average of past Oregon yearling
teams but as yet has not given them
an actual test. So far the green
babes are a strong team in theory
only.
Thus far practice has been mostly
in the nature of elementary drill in
individual offense and defense,
stressing footwork, dribbling and ac
eurate passing. The yearlings have
had practically no scrimmage work.
All this is due to Leslie’s efforts
to give all the men out an oppor
tunity -of showing up proficiency in
the game and any signs of develop
ment in new material.
' Leslie Expects Win
The frosh, with so little team
work to date, are not expected to
display a polished brand of ball
when they go on the floor against
the invading prep cagers tomorrow.
They probably will appear ragged
in their team play as compared with <
the Commerce squad, because the
latter group have been playing to
gether a much longer period of time.
However, Coaeli Leslie expects to
take the visitors into camp. The
yearling squad has enough power
in the ranks of its ex-high school
luminaries to make it a dangerous
team if the players had never team
ed together before.
The freshman mentor has given
out a tentative line-up fot the open
ing whistle. The center position is
a toss-up between Gene Eberhart,
tall and gangling Eugene high grad
uate, and Edward Dvorak, a. slender
young man who hails from the wide
open spaces of Montana. Eberhart
is taller than Dvorak, and will prob
ably play the first part of tho tilt.
Shades of Okerberg.
Eberhart in his physical construc
tion, is reminiscent of Okerberg. He
is tall, extremely slim and stooping,
and deceives an unsuspecting ob
server into believing that the first

Orating Journalists
To the world in general today is
just another day.
To five quavering souls at large
on the Oregon campus, today is—
Friday—the 3 3th!
Today this quaking quintet must
emerge from the privacy of their
respective and respectable abodes
and disport themselves in evening
dress before the critical optics of
their fellow students.
Just before the witching hour of
assembly, at 10 minutes till 9, this
fearful five will mount those his
toric steps before the old library
and for the edification of the visit
ing high school delegates wil dis
sertate on what—and how?
These nervous neophytes of Sigma
Delta Chi, national journalistic hon
orary fraternity, will rove the cam
pus throughout the day and far
into the night, silk hats at a jaunty
angle, canes twirling merrily,
“happy” and “carefree,” — “oh,
what a life!”
These wandering black and
white ghosts are not to be mistaken
for preppers. They really belong on
the campus, even if some of their
dress suits, don't. They answer to
such cognomens as Don Johnston,
Lawrence Mitchelmore, Citrl Greg
ory, Chalmers Nooe, and Harry Dut
ton.

Woodward Archer, ex-Medford bas
ketball flash, at the forward berths.
Both these men are good shots at
the hemp, and are shifty on foot.
Archer, who played end for the
duckling |oqtbaII eleven, is harjl. to
stop when lie decides to dribble.
Horner a Scrapper
Harold Olinger, curly headed bas
keteor who has his name carved in
the Hall of Fame at Salem high, and
j Cliff Horner, bashful and modest,
1 a team-mate of Ebcrhart on the
Eugene five, will probably draw the
opening guard assignments. Olinger
is a close checker, and fast at break
ing to the offense.
Horner is short and stocky, and
a fighter. The “bigger they are the
easier to catch” is the motto of this
tenacious scrapper. Horner is not
cr.ly a good defense player but when
his team is on the offense he is an
important scoring threat.
Spike intends to use other men
in the contest. “I want to use as
many as I can,” he said. Some of
the alternates lie mentioned for the
duckling caging crew were Ted
Park, Bill Pittman, Paul Walgren,
and John Barber. There are a num
ber of others besides those named
that the frosh coach is going to
give an opportunity to show their
metal in the game, he indicated.
These men and others will be heard
from later, as the season progresses.

asked mm to turn out tor basketball
that winter, ills predictions were
amply fulfilled for Epps developed
into a star forward at Franklin, a
fitting running-mate for the sensa
tional Seallon. Later when the
Franklin five were runners-up in
the state tournament, and made the
trip to the National tournament in
19124, it was Dave and Seallon who
were largely responsible for the
Quaker aggregation placing third in
the consolation tournament.
Even surpassing his basketball
record are Epps’ achievements in
baseball. He played four years in
high school, setting a record one
season by playing in eighteen sue-1
eossive games and making one or I
more hits in each contest. Coming
to Oregon, Dave played on the Erosh
nine, and last year was a mainstay
on the varsity, lie plays in the out
field, but his strong point is in his
hitting, which causes the downfall
of many a strong pitcher.
Last year Epps came within one ,
or two minutes of making his let
ter in varsity basketball, but an
infected foot early in the season
kept him out of many games. Al- !
though he held down a position as
forward last season/ he has been i
shifted to guard this year and prom
ises to be a valuable man in that!
position.
Dave is a junior, twenty years
old and a member of Beta Theta l’i
fraternity. lie tips the beam at
170 pounds and is over six feet in
height. Majoring in economics,
Epps has not definitely decided
what line of work he will take up
upon his graduation from Oregon.
With another year of intercollegiate
basketball still ahead of him, Dave
is an important asset to Oregon's
success ou the maple court. ^

Among the candidates for tho two

berg, and Myron Gray.
The Webfoot track team will elect
a captain •for this year’s team next
Thursday, January 19, at Virgil
Earl’s office in McArthur Court.
There are nine track lettermen in
school, but only eight of them are
eligible for the honor. Jerry Extra,
who will have a vote, has had the
limit, three years, of conference com
petition.
Tho most likely candidate is Vie
Wetzel, the only two-year lotterman
on the team. Ralph McCullock, Bill
Crawford, Vernon McGee, Clarence
Hill, Joe Standard, George Burnell,
and George Stager are the other
lettermen eligible for the captaincy.
