Frosh Cagers PJease Leslie In Turnouts Practise Early in Year Gives Coach Line On the Players Men From Do-Nut Teams In Frosli Roster Freshman hoop prnctiee opened its season with n bong Monday evening in McArthur Igloo when i>2 year ling cagors turned (iiit in answer to frosh coach “Spike” Leslie’s call.; Last night a few new faces were added to bring the number close to three score. Leslie is well pleased with the present outlook. There seems to be plenty of good material on hand, which include among the usual gal axy of prep stars a number of .'ill state maple court artists. The main object of this early freshman basketball turnout is, ac cording to Leslie, to get a line on ttie men, getting acquainted with the players and their abilities in gen eral so that with the opening of next term, practice may start off imme diately without any unnecessary preliminaries. Term’s Drill Basic The drill for the balance of this t.frm will be mostly of a funda mental order, grounding the players in 11m Oregon style of basketball. Freshmen who have any intention of turning out for the duckling quin tet are urged by Coach Leslie, if* they have not already done so, to see him. If they need the time for studies he will excuse them from practice, but it is imperative that he be informed as to their inton liens. A number of men from the dough nut teams are included in the frosh roster. With the exception of one man the entire ICugene state champ ionship quintet that made the trip to Chicago last winter are signed up for practice. Prep Stats Out i iii'y jirr .n an nan, Jlorner, Max Rubcnstein, Hill Pitt man, and Austin Colbert. A number of men from football arc out, in cluding Woodward Arcller, Francis Hill, Ed Dvorak, George Chappell, and John Kitzmiller. Home other cagers who have been heard from on the prep spotlight are LaVant Holden, Frank Andrews, and Harold Olingor. These are only a few names picked at. random as there are others out who have cut their names in the high school hall of fame and are out to make com petition tough for this season’s duckling five. Kansas Frosli Lids Differ From Oregon, Says Dick Syring The cap worn by the freshmen on the University of Kansas campus differs somewhat, in make to that of the Oregon frosli, according to Dick Syring, who returned last week from a Sigma Delta Chi convention at Lawrence, Kansas. Their cap is blue with a white bill, and for a week preceding a game the fresh 111111 must wear streamers of the school colors on the caps and must walk fast enough to keep the colors CAUTION THERE are many imitations of Zip pers on the market to day, but we sell the genuine Zipper, mudo onlv by Goodrich, and fitted with the only smooth-sliding, sure uction HOOK LESS FASTENER. Hubbs Issues Call For Manuscripts For Junior Revue Opportunity for aspiring musical comedy composers to “air” their talents at the .1 tinier Revue is given in an announcement made yesterday by Donald Hubbs, president of the junior class, requesting that any one who had a plot in tangible form turn it in to him immediately. The' idea need not necessarily be complete, according to Hubbs, but there must be enough of it to indi cate whether it would be a success and a financial possibility. He ex plained that the emphasis should be on the scenes rather than on the dialogue. Several campus people have mani fested their interest in the affair, and two or three suggestions have already been turned in. Pinal decision as to the choice rests with the faculty committee and the member of the yet-to-bc appointed Junior Week-end direc torate who will be head of the Junior Revue. “Creole Moon,” last tyenr’s re vue, was written by Etlin Jeanne Clark and Bob Yoke. Coach Reinhart Schedules Daily Hoop Practise Conference Year Opens With Idaho Here January 21 With the football season closed, basketball is now the foremost ath letic activity on the campus. The Webfootors have begun daily prac tice in preparation for the confer ence season which opens with the University of Idaho at Lugene, Jan uary 21. Although C'oneh Reinhart has in troduced a number of offensive tac tics to ttie Wellfoots, the preliminary drill in fundamentals is still the im portant feature of each workout. Pivoting, dribbling, shifting the body, and handling the hall are all included in the nightly sessions. The large turnout this year has 1 necessitated a division in the squad. Reinhart is working with the first group which consists chiefly of let ter mc-n and reserves from last year’s team. Algot. “Swede” Westergren, recently appointed as assistant to | Reinhart, is working with the second squad. Last night both squads spent con siderable time practicing with the ball under the basket. One man was stationed under the backboard as a guard; two others endeavoring to work the ball down to within easy range for shooting. Pew basketball games are won from shots coming from the center of the floor. Rein hart emphasizes the ability of a team to pass and dribble its way under the basket, and the success of Oregon’s teams in the past is indica SJSISISISEMSISIBISISIBJSJSJSJSEfSMSlSEI^I, I L, & R.
