Delta Sigma Rho Grants Chapter To Oregon Body National Speaking Frat To Install Society During Term Delta Sigma Rho, national public speaking honorary society, has granted a chapter of the society to the University of Oregon. Just prior to Christmas vacation a letter was received from President Stanley Houck, of Delta Sigma Rho, inform ing the University that it had been granted a charter. President Houck himself will install the chapter some time this term. Oregon petitioned Delta Enigma Rho last year. Several members of the faculty are members of the so ciety: President Arnold Bennett Hall, Dean E. C. Robbins, of the school of business administration, Professor Hugh E. Rosson, associate professor of English and law, J. K. Horner, assistant professor of Eng lish, and J. Stanley Gray, assistant professor of English. Delta Sigma Rho is the oldest in tercollegiate public speaking society which is exclusively an honor so ciety and national in scope. The constitution provides that only those students who have actually repre sented their institution at large in some intercollegiate forensic contest are eligible for membership. Delta Sigma Rho originated in the largest institutions in the country and it grants charters to the large insti tutions. The date of installation of the chapter here has not yet been de cided. Read What Interests You Advises Alfons Korn, Oregon Rhodes Scholar Read what interests you; read more than is necessary for class work. That is the advice Alfons Korn, recently appointed Rhodes scholar from Oregon, would give to students. He even goes so far as to say that, if one is especially interested in one phase of a subject, it is all right to read profusely about that and let class work slide for a while. He believes that the most good can be found in general reading that gives personal satisfaction, rather than in trudging a systematic line such as is followed by many sucess ful aspirants to Rhodes scholarships. Korn, who is a major in general literature, intends to “do reading” for the honor school of English lan guage and literature. In other words, his plan is to major in Eng lish. He believes that he will teach literature on his return to the United States in 1930, His trip to England is being plan ned with the intention of spending some time in New York City and several weeks in Paris, where he claims he will do the usual things. I The term at Oxford begins about the first of October; his summer I vacations will be spent in traveling over the continent. Korn, who is 20, did not make up his mind to try out for the scholar Galoshes and Rub ber Boots Half - Soled EUGENE VULCANIZING WORKS 957 Oak Street ship until about two weeks before the examinations were given here. It is interesting to note that he has attended school for 16 years within a radius of five blocks—the Patterson school on Alder, the Uni versity high school, and the Uni versity of Oregon—and that Theo dore Buch, named for the scholar ship at large, if there is one, at tended high school and college with Korn, and the Condon, grammar school about seven blocks from the campus.
