Portland Firms; To Aid Students In Advertising Summer Scholarships Will Give Practical Experience to Nine Business Institutions Co operate Willingly Summer scholarships which will benefit nine students in advertising courses have been established by the Morning Oregonian, the Oregon Journal, the Portland Telegram, Honig-Oooper, Croslty and Failing, and Botsford-Constantine Advertis ing agencies, Olds, Wortman and King, Lipman, Wolfe and company, and Meier, Frank and company. Each institution agreed to be the donor of one scholarship which will give the beneficiary an opportunity to become a regular employee of the firm for eight or ten weeks dur ing the summer at approximately $20 a week. The idea for the creation of the “training on the flreline” came to Prof. W. F. G. Thacher of the school of journalism last July while at tending the annual convention of Pacific Coast Advertising Clubs as sociation at San Francisco, Cali fornia. “I have realized for some time that the great defect in our train ing was that we could give the stu dents little actual contact with big time advertising undertakings, so I decided to see if we could not create those opportunities jin tlio state’s one metropolis,” he said in explaining the growth of the plan. "I had no idea how the proposal would be received but in every case it was met with an evident desire to co-operate with tho school, and a definite interest in the plan was shown. In interviewing persons, I was impressed with the fact that employers are vitally concerned with the matter of personnel, and are keenly interested in any plan that is calculated to provide them with trained men.” Professor Thacher expressed the opinion that he could extend the list of nine institutions almost in definitely as they are the only oneB that were asked to co-operate. Football (Continued from page one) Willamette will line up for the opening kickoff today. Sovoral of tho regulars are nursing bumps and bruises, but McEwan wants to make sure of tho outcome of the contest before using reserves. Arthur Ord, the wee one, has successfully mnin ' tained his usurpation of the left halfback job against the best ef forts of George Burnell and “Boots” Vitus. Lynn Jones, limping slightly, and Ira Woodio, not in the best of sorts, will be out to make a quick job of it. Wetzel rounds out tho buckfield. Hlauson, Smith, Dixon, Sinclair Women’s Gym Shoes White duck trimmed in black, crepe rub ber sole. Hodgen, Kerns, and Klippel wiill form the forward wall which starts the fray. Willamette Says “Ouch! It appears likely at this writing that today’s contest will be staged under the customary weather con ditions, and a heavy field is made to order for a heavy backfield and a heavy line. If anyone is dubious as to the hitting power of the Ore gon team, they are invited to read a dispatch from Salem which states that six of the Willamette team were left behind when the Bearcats, went north to play Washington be cause of injuries received in the Oregon game of last Saturday. Proposed Amendment Comes Before W. A. A. A suggestion that the constitu tion of the Women’s Athletic asso ciation be amended to charge fees of $1.00 a year for all members in stead of 50 cents, the former charge, was brought up at the first W. A. A. council meeting of the year Wed nesday night. The suggested amend ment which met with the council’s approval, will come before the first W. A. A. mass meeting for consid eration. The council decided to send a lgtter to the head of each women’s house on the campus asking that someone interested in W. A. A. work should take charge of all sport an nouncements or bulletin distribution in her respective house. Yearlings (Continued from page one) (lummy scrimmage have been in order.
