Aggie First Year Men Give
Yearlings Hard Fight
MAPLE IS WINNERS’ STAR
Burnell, Woody, Martin and
Flegel Oregon Stars
By Dick Syring
Eleven red "shirted Oregon Aggie
rook football players and the super
stitious “Friday, 13th,” were all
too much for the Oregon yearling
team yesterday afternoon, and as
result they were defeated 9 to 7 in
a hard fought game played on Bell
field, Corvallis.
The game started with a rush.
Flegel kicked off to the Corvallis
lads. Maple, quarterback, returned
the ball with a fifty yard run.
From here on until in the latter
part of the quarter the game was
just a punting duel, both teams
showing good defensive and little
offensive.
Maple Does Good Kicking
In the last part of the quarter
the ball was Oregon frosh’s ton
their 20 yard line. Martin, tackle,
booted the ball 40 yards. Maple re
turned it 20 yards and then through
a series of line bucks and end runs
the Aggies worked the ball down
to the 25 yard line where Maple
made a well directed place kick.
The Oregon yearling eleven start
ed the second quarter with new
fight. A series of line bucks
brought the ball to the25 yard line
where a bullet-like pass from
Woody to Pope, left end, went
over the goal line for the Oregon
babes only score. Woody made the
try for point kick.
aLte in the third quarter the Ag
gies marched the ball down towards
the Lemon-Yellow frosh’s goal line
and were held one foot from the
goal. Here Martin booted the ball
25 yards, from behind his own goal
posts. The ball was returned five
yards and worked down to the 30
yard line where a pass irom Whit
lock to Maple scored 'the Kooks
only touchdown. Maple failed to
kick goal.
Burnell, Woody Outstanding
Burnell, fullback and Woody,
quarterback, were the outstanding
men behind the line for the frosh.
Martin, tackle, and Flegel, guard
played a good game on the line.
Maple, quarterback, was the
greatest ground gainer for the Ag
gies while Luce, left tackle, was
the outstanding man on their line.
The rooks made five first downs
from scrimmage for gains of 67
yards to the frosh’s two first
downs from scrimmago and four
from passes for total of 87 yards.
The Aggies attempted three passes,
completed one. The frosh attempt
ed 11 pases, four incomplete, one
intercepted and six completed. Bur
nell, fullback, was Oregon’s great
est ground gainer with 28 yards.
Whitlock, rook, booted the ball for
an average of 39 yards to the 32
yard average of Woody and Mar
tin.
