Illumination of Printing
Type One-Tenth Second,
Method Of Investigation
Miss Georgia Johnson, under the
supervision of Dr. Harold R. Cros
land, of the psychology department,
is working on a series of type
tests, based upon the fact that the
ability of a person to take in a
great many items at one time, by
seeing, hearing, or any other sense,
is limited.
Dr. Crosland, due to his knowl
ege of printing, has conceived the
idea of using different sizes of
type and different fonts of type
to discover their influences on the
range of attention.
Attention Limited
The customary technique of the
experiment regarding the range of
attention is to expose a group of
mixed letters of the alphabet to
the eye for one-tenth of a second,
and to determine about how many
of those letters flashed before the
eye can be recalled correctly im
mediately afterwards by the aver
age person. The result is known as
^he normal range of attention.
“The range of attention is .al
ways limited,” Dr. Crosland ex
plained. “When we try to spread
our attention over too much ground,
we don’t add to the number of
items which fits our original abil
ity, but make mistakes in those
items we usually could get correct
ly.”

tests is a little box containing a
system of mirrors in such a fashion
that light sent through frosted win
dows is reflected on a card. This
card reflects through a transpar
ent mirror into the eyes of the sub
ject. , The light is equally distri
buted over all the characters on
•the card, and the apparatus is so
arranged that the flashes of light
can be controlled and limited in
time to one-tenth of a second.
Nothing moves before the eye, and
all disturbing influences are elim
inated.
In addition to the tests using dif
ferent types and different fonts of
the same type, the subject is also
tested by various letter combina
tions to see what arrangements of
letters and of the line of print,
with the serifs above or below, are
most legible as shown by an in
crease in the range of attention.
Combinations Used
i Combinations of letters all tall,
j short, curved, diagonal, -or oblique
are introduced successively by the
| card. Then the different kinds are
! combined, such as curved and obli
j que. or tall and short, in order to
j determine where the fewest or
j greatest number of errors are made.
The type now used in the experi
| mentation is 10 point Caslon body
i type.
