METHODS EXPLAINED
Football training should last the
year round, according to prominent
coaches. With this in mind one of
Oregctoi ’s veteran football Jtackles
the last summer using his muscle
and beef to good advantage.

ths past summer he kept in perfect
trim by taking the buck out of
buckng horses and by putting the
horns of wild steers on the ground.
According to Bert this is one of
the best muscle builders a prospect
ive athlete could indulge in for his
summer’s pleasure. . Work of this
type has a tendency to harden a
man besides putting him in» shape
to undergo the hard knocks received
in a hectc gridron contest he says.
New Grandstand to

time prohibit the building of any

Other work being done on Hay
wood field will consist in the closing
in the back of all bleachers. When
the football season starts Hayward
field for the first time will be a
dosed athletic stadium.
A new and large press box is to
built on top of the old grandstand
and the old grandstand is to be
strengthened to take care of the ad
ditional weight.
A committee known as the A. S.
U. O. building committee has had
charge of the building of the now
grandstand. Funds for this were
furnished from the new $5,00 addi
tional fee voted en last spring. The
members of the building committee
are Ted Larson, chairman, Dean W.
G. Hale, Dean John F. Bovard, Ed
gar G. Martin and Jack Benefiel,
secretary.
Plans for the new structure were
prepared by Laurence and Halford,
architects of Portland.
California Will Have

What Stanford needs is a real
field general who will keep his
team working together and get
away from the hit or miss general
ship they have used in the past. A
possible exception is the fourth
quarter of the Stanford—Califor
nia game last year. Rut Warner
rehearsed every play that was used
to Solomon, sitting next to him on
the bench, for three-quarters of the
game. However, to illustrate my
point, in the Notre Dame game
Stanford made forty yards on two
end plays. Then with first down on
Notre Dame’s fifteen yard men
the quarterback called the same
play again, and lost five yards and
his chance to score.

writer, who is not well acquainted

Strader, the Saint’s full back, clip
ped Thatcher, California’s right end,
so neatly that it looked like he used
a scythe.
U. S. C. has great material but
their offense has looked lik* some
thing the well known cat dragged
in. This -'ear under Howard Jones,
they may snap out of it but it looks
dubious this early in the season.
Oregon meets the Bears the week
after the Bears play Saint Mary’s,
and therein lies Oregon’s oppor
tunity. If Oregon gets away to
a good start in that game it will be
some battle. California does not like
a soft field as their place are all
timed for a fast field,, so they
should not be at their best on Mult
nomah Field.
It is a mathematical- certainty
that the Bears will be beaten some
time. I do not suppose Oregon would
object to Bear meat.
