    MEMBERS OF FACULTY
ATTEND MUSIC MEET
Rex Underwood Lectures on
Violin Technique
Several prominent members of
the school of music faculty attend
ed the annual meeting of the Ore
gon State Music Teachers’ associ
ation, held in Portland at the Elks’
Temple last week-end. An illus
trated lecture was given by Rex
Underwood, head of the violin de
partment, on the “Psychology of
the Hand of Relation 'to V\ty>liin
Playing” at the Friday meeting of
the association. Mr. Underwood is
a nationally known authority on
this phase of technique; his meth
od of hand development is indorsed
by Fritz Kreisler, and many other
internationally recognized artists
are recommending his work in this
line.
The University String Quartette,
composed of Lora Teshner, cello;
Rex Underwood, viloin; Alberta
Potter, vjolin; Buford Roach, viola,
and Mrs. .Tanc Thacher, piano,play
ing the three movements 'of the
Schumann Quintette at the ban
quet last Saturday evening in the
Elks’ Temple, which brought to a
close the 1925 meeting of the as
sociation. The quartette was en
thusiastically received, and many
predictions were made as to the
successful future of the organiza
tion.
The quartette was organized last
year by Rex Underwood and since
then it has held a prominent place
on many programs in the State. The
future of the organization is un
usually promising, as every member
is an artist and there is no other
professional string quartette in Eu
gene. This type of work has al
ways won high favor in Europe,
and the Flonzaloy Quartette has
a derived international distinction.
An abundance of compositions have
been written for groups of this
type, but only superior musicians
can perform them with any degree
of proficiency.

JAMES CASE.'
T am in favor of a progressive
“Emerald.” My attitude towards
the University daily has been ex
plained in assembly and may lie
read in full on tho campus today.
I wish to state that I am heartily
in accord with the proposed $!>.00
fee addition. I am anxious to lend
my support to this amendment.
EDWARD MILLER.
Equal representation of all de
partments and schools of the Uni
versity in the columns of the Emer
ald is the main plank in my plat
form ns candidate for the editor
ship. Too much publicity for cer
tain departments and too little for
others has been one of the chief
complaints against the campus pa
per in the past and it is my idea
to remedy this by the establishment
of an editorial board appointed by
the various department student bod
ies.
My editorial policy would neither
be radical nor reactionary, but a
mean between these two extremes
bv which the whole campus could
express its views in the Emerald
columns.
T believe in furthering tho gift
campaign now being staged by tho
University, but T would not en
dorse every move made by those
in charge of it without careful
study and a fair exohnngo of opin
ion in the communication columns.
A spirit of co-operation between
the student body officials, the fac
ulty, the University authorities,
and the editor, T believe is necos
nary for the publishing of a good
campus paper. As editor, however,
1 would carry on an editorial pol
ice tine* 1 believe to bo for the bet
terment of tl»e entire student body
if the school authorities appeared
in a contrary position or tried by
unrighteous means to force their
legislation upon the students.
I would be responsible to the
student body of the University as
a whole, only, and would not be
directed by a smaller group nor
responsible to it for my actions.
I’m for the $.">.00 fee to be voted
for at the election tomorrow. 1
am -also for an Emerald that rep
resents the whole campus. Tf elect
ed T will strive to publish a paper
that will reflect every department
and school activitv in the Univer
sitv. Responsibility to the stu
dent body as a whole and to no
other group is the main plank in
mv platform.
