Kain or shine, the first competi
tion of the track season is .sched
uled for next Saturday afternoon
at 2:30 o’clock on Hayward field.
Seven events will he run off, with
pproximately HO men competing.
1 ill Hayward says that the men on
the list must turn out on time or
they might as well turn in their
equipment. Intense work is begin
ring in track with these competi
tions every Saturday until the
meets begin so that' Hayward must
eliminate all the men who are not,
willing to work.
In the field events the freshmen
aspirants will be combined with the
varsity but in the sprints they will
come in different heats. The events
to be run off are all cut down from
the regular distance because of the
early season condition of the track
men. They are 75 yards, 5-4 mile,
<10 yard high hurdles, 300 yard
dash, shot put, high jump and jave
lin.
Event to Place Men
The main idea of the competition
in to give Bill Hayward a chance
to see who are his best men and the
men whom he can figure on for the
spring training. Another value of
the meets is to place the men in
their proper events. Many of the
freshmen have entered events
which they have chosen themselves.
These may be the wrong events and
the competition will bring that out.

The track will lie in fairly good
shape. The new 220 yard straight
away will not be in condition until
later in the year. A new layer of
cinders will be put. on and other
work done on it. Officials for the
competition will be picked later.

The dates for the freshman relays
with the Books has not been de

May 2, the same date that the var
sit..- relay teams go to Seattle. The
relays will be on Hayward field
this year. They will include, the
4 mile relay, 2 mile relay, 1 mile
relay, 880 relay, 110 relay and tiled
ley relay.

BUILD SETS FOR STAGE
University of Washington.—The
theatre workshop, one of the new
; features of the rapidly growing
: dramatic department of the univer
sity, has for its principle work the
designing and construction of mod
el stage sets. The instructor is
Burton W. dames, instructor of
dramatics at the Cornish school,
who teaches university classes in
dramatic, interpretation and the
theatre workshop.
Designing and construction of
model stage sets have been the prin
cipal work of the,past cpiarter, and
some clever and colorful sets decor
ate the workshop. The class also
did practical construction work on
the stage for the last all-univer
sity play.

game in which the team partici
pates. This must be done before
nine o’clock on the day of the
game. These regulations will be
strictly enforced, it was announced.
Responsibility in these matters will
be a determining factor in the
awarding of points and appoint
ment on (he Mythical All-Star and
special teams at the end of the
season. All players are asked to
appear in regulation gymnasium
clothes.
Points will be adjusted for first
team substitutes who plnv in a full
game.

Lunar Phenomena Foretold

“A (initial .eclipse of the moofi
will occur Monday, February 9, at
one A. M.”
Such is a statement given out by
Professor K. H-. McAlister, of the
mechanics and astronomy depart
ment.
The next solar eclipse will take
place July 21, Professor McAlister
said. It will be unusual in that
a circle of light will be seen around
tile outside of the moon when it
covers the center of the sun. Ho
! suggested that a dime, representing
I the moon, be placed on a nickle, the
sun, to illustrate what the effect
'will be.
“ Eclipses can be foretold for
j several centuries ahead,” Professor
McAlister said. “It is all a mat
ter of mathematics. Eclipses of
the sun always comp at the time
of the new moon, while those of
the moon come with the full moon.
There are always at least two solar
eclipses a year, and never more
than five. Some years see no lunar
eclipses, while three is the maxi
mum number.
“One year, every eighteen years
there is a total of seven eclipses,”
stated Professor McAlister. “ In
1917 we had four of the sun and
three of the moon. There will be
five solar and two lunar in 1935..”
An eclipse of the sun, he ex
plained, is the result of the moon’s
coming between the earth and the
sun, so that the light of the sun
is shut off. A lunar eclipse is
caused by the moon going through
the shadow cast by the earth on the
side farthest from the sun.
