Boy’s Grief Founded on Experience of
Author’s Youth; Few Revisions
Made in Original Story
“Boy’s Grief” is the name of a short
story written by W. F. G. Thacher,
instructor in the School of Journalism,
which was published in the November
issue of the Atlantic Monthly.
“The story is more or less true,”
said Thacher. “It was an experience I
had when I was a very young boy,
more or less an orphan, and more or
less in love with a young girl.” Mr.
Thacher said he never thought of writ
ing up the experience until recently,
when the idea came to him over night
to have it published. “It is one of
these stories which just pop up,” he
explained, adding that he had scarcely
revised three words of the story after
he had written it. “I sent it first to
Scribner’s, and then to the Atlantic
Monthly where it was accepted. And
that is about all the history of my
little story.”
CHURCH CHOIR HAS PARTY
Mrs. Giffen Entertains Presbyterian
Singers; Many Are Students
The Presbyterian choir was enter
tained at the home of Mrs. Bruce R.
Giffen Tuesday night with a Hallo
we’en party. The occasion was the
semi-annual dinner given to the choir
by the woman’s auxiliary of the church.
Weird ghost stories by firelight, and
other gruesome gaieties were enjoyed
during the evening.
The choir is under the direction of
Ronald Reid, and is composed mostly
of students in the University. Mr.
John B. Seifert, of the school of music,
is the solist. Last night Mrs. Giffen
entertained the University girls in the
Westminster Guild.
WILLAMETTE’S SYSTEM
The monthly flunk list has been posted
at Willamette, serving as a gentle re
minder to all students whose work has
not been up to standard. Each
“flunkee” must interview the president
within a week. Ninety-four students
have been invited to President Deney’s
“At Home."
