R.O.T.C. RECEIVES' RIFLES FOR SHOOT Coming Events for Men and Women to be Shot With New Gallery Pieces With the arrival of 14 new gallery rifles, the K. O. T. C. is now completely equipped for practice, and both men and women are urged to come up at any time and shoot. Two indoor and 10 outdoor ranges will be available be ginning Monday. Inter-company and inter-fraternity matches will be in order during Janu ary, and after these are concluded, matches with other colleges will be ield. It is the hope of the military department that all who can do so will turn out for the inter-fraternity and inter-company matches so that an abundance of material will be on hand from which to pick a team to represent the University. “It is the aim of the military depart ment to establish rifle shooting as a sport in the University,” said E. O. Arnold, who is in charge of the work, “and we hope that the two varsity teams, men’s and women’s, will be among the best in the country.” If the standing of the Oregon team is high enough In the ninth corps area matches, contests with other R. O. T. C. units will be arranged, according to those in charge. This match will be conducted between the leading units in the country, and will take place be tween March 15 and the close of school. Challenges from many colleges of the country, among which are Northwest ern, Delaware, California and others have been received, and it is hoped to be able to accept all of them by the end of the year. Rifle shooting for girls will be es pecially stressed this year, the depart ment announces, And all girls are urged to report for practice whenever they have time. The following statement in Tegard to the range has been issued by Captain Arnold. “Beginning Monday, December 11, the gallery range will be open and available for those girls who are inter ested or wish to learn rifle shooting. If you have never fired a rifle before, come up and find out what it is like. Some of our best shots last year were J developed from girls who had never had a rifle in their hands. It is an art that anyone can learn. “Wo would like to have all girls interested sign up for practice periods between December 11 and January 15. (Not to include Christmas vacation). About January 15 to 31, it is contem plated that a doughnut rifle compe tition be held between all houses on the campus. Susan Campbell and Hen dricks hall will be entitled to enter two teams, all other houses, one team each. Team to consist of five girls, all scores to count. It is suggested that a team manager be selected in each house whoso duty it shall be to see that all girls interested turn out for practice and to select the five team members who can best represent that house. “An all-university team will thon be selected at the completion of the in tramural competition. This team will consist of 15 members—best “shots” in the University. “Our team won every competition engaged in last year, including O. A. C., and we can do it again.” OLD STUDENT HONORED Gordon Fletcher Appointed Intern in Pennsylvania Hospital Cordon Fletcher, who attended the University of Oregon in 191(1-’17, and the Portland medical school in lPIS-’li), has been appointed as intern in tlie Pennsylvania hospital in Philadelphia. After leaving Oregon, Gordon spent two years in the Jefferson Medical Col lege preceding his appointment as in tern. This appointment is a coveted honor, as the Pennsylvania hospital, which was founded in 1751, is regarded as one of the best hospitals in the east,i and has an illustrious history as far1 as medicine is concerned. In a letter received from him by President Campbell he says: “We now have six Oregon men-—all from the University—at Jefferson Medical college. All are doing good work and are looking forward to settling in the west some day. We often get together, talk over old days at Oregon, and rejoice at any victories that our Alma Mater makes.” LOCAL DRIVE SUCCESS, SAYS DON ZIMMERMAN Students Pledge 3200 to Friendship Fund in Thursday’s Campaign; House Speeches MXde The Student Friendship drive on the campus Thursday was very successful, in proportion to the short time allowed for it, according to Don Zimmerman, general chairman. The total amount of the money received is not yet known, but it is thought to be well over $200. In the house-to-house campaign, the women were more liberal than the men, said Zimmerman. Donations will rtill be received for the drive if those who missed subscribing Thursday will leave their money at the Y. W. bungalow with Miss Collier or at the Y. M. hut with Mrs. Donnelly. It is asked that money pledged to the campaign, be paid up as soon as possible. This campaign was not held on the campus last year as it failed to pass the drive committee, and was only al lowed this year. The love story of the stage play has been retained in the Gold win picture, “Sherlock Holmes,” starring John Barrymore, which ends its successful showing at the Castle with today’s presentation.
