Military Department to Build
New Firing Range
The organization of a girls ’ rifle team,
plans for which have been in process
of formation for the past two weeks,
was completed in a conference held by
Major Baird, Lieutenant Knowles, and
Student Major Emerald Sloan and
Wanda Daggett, a senior in the TJniver
sity, together with ten other girls who
are interested in the project.
Miss Daggett is the organizer of the
team. Lieutenant Knowles will act as
coach. Tt. is stimulated that when ail
girls who have expressed interest in
the plans have signed up, the team will
number about 20. Eventually it is
planned to have two or more girls’
teams.
Major Baird said that a series of
doughnut competitions may be arranged
at a later date when the girls have hail
sufficient practice and that next year,
at least, one or more intercollegiate
matches may be scheduled, probably one
with the girls of O. A. C.
Bulls-eyes Made
During the past week-end, the girls
now signed up have put in many hours
of practice. Tn tho shooting Saturday
morning Wanda Daggett registered the
first bullseye. Sunday morning, the
honor of hitting the bullseye with her
first shot went to Waive Anderson,
while Jane TTuson, and Wanda Daggett
tied for second place each registering
a bullseye on her second shot. Martha
Pickens and Wanda Daggett tied for
second place with a total score of 4(1
shots out of a possible 50. The tie was
finally decided in Miss Dagget’s favor.
The military department is planning
to construct a fifty foot riflo range
immediately behind the present bar
racks, particularly for the use of the
girls. Coach Knowles reports that
while the men are certainly desired to
use the range, yet preference of time
will be given the women. The range
will be well gravelled and will be
i equipped with ten targets. The girls
will change into their hiking clothes
at the Woman's building.
Squads to be Formed
j In order that congestion may not
result on either the indoor or out door
ranges, the girls will be divided into
i squads which will be assigned to pe
riods which do not conflict with their
I study program. In addition instruc
I tion will be given in sight-setting, aim
ing and triangulation exercises of the
i regular rifle course.
Later in the season all places on the
team will be awarded by competition,
and, at present it is desired that every
girl who has the time and ambition
I will turn in her name either to Wanda
Daggett at the Alpha Sigma house, or
to Lieutenant M. E. Knowles at the
military department. Miss Daggett
urges that girls be not diffident about
i turning out since the practice has
proved that girls who have never
| touched a rifle before, are able fre
| quontly, to register a bullseye at the
| first shot.
