FAIRBANKS WORKS ON STATUARY FOR CAMPUS “Mother Group” Will be Ten Feet High When Done Professor Avard Fairbanks, of the school of art, is working on the minia ture of piece of statuary, 10 feet high, symbolic of Oregon motherhood and young womanhood, which will adorn the women’s quadrangle. “It is to be known as the ‘Mother Group’,” said Mr. Fairbanks, “repre senting an Oregon mother and a girl of university age.” “The girl is extending her left hand, seeking education; her right arm is holding to the ideals of motherhood; the ideals which her mother taught 'her. Youth in her exuberance of am bition, of vitality, reaches forth on tiptoe and in doing so puts herself in a balanced position in life. Thus hold ing to the ideals of motherhood, she keeps a well-balanced thought and poise throughout life. “The draperies of the two are sug gestive of their spirits. Those of the mother express strength, while those of the daughted express restlessness, grace, and beautifully flowing lines. “The young women who will pass it day by day, it is hoped, will get a new thought, a new message, each time they chance by. It is desired to in spire them with a deep love for their mothers and their home life. The group will impress upon them that in coming to the University they are not to forsake the home teachings and the deep insight of their parents. The group is to be chisled out of pink grnnite, which expresses at once strength and ^eJlcacy.,, Tho group will ho sot in tho oontor of tho women’s quadrangle, which is flanked by tho Woman’s building and tho two dormitories for women. Tho cost of tho statuary has not yet boon estimated. Aeeeording to Professor Fairbanks, tho piece of statuary will bo four or five years in the making.
