SPORT NEWS By EP HOYT The battle for the coast championship will be this year as last, between the University of California and Stanford. Competition for coast honors was ex pected to come from Washington State or the Oregon Aggies, but with both of these teams on the short end of the scores turned in Saturday it is up to the Cardinals to fight it out with the Bruins. * # * The Cougars’ defeat at the hands of Andy Smith’s “wonder” team was a disappointment to many Northwest fans who had pinned their faith on the Pullmanitos to bring the championship back to the north. Jenne’s punting was undoubtedly a vital factor in the defeat although California demon strated the fact that they had a super ior all-around team. Onside kicks were prominent in botii teams attack, and the Cougars came within striking distance of a touch down in the third quarter when .Tonne kicked onside from California’s 30 yard line. The ball soared high in the air and came down on the 5-yard line. Tn the resultant scramble Mdvor of the j Staters almost redeemed it on the ! 1-yard line but it slid away from him and a Bruin back recovered it behind his own goal. * # * Stanford’s 14-7 defeat of the Aggies was a surprise, for the Aggies were considered championship contenders and were the heavy favorites in the betting.
